Temperatures are forecast to climb into the upper 90s and low 100s from Washington, DC, to Boston, with humidity pushing \u201cfeels like\u201d temperatures as high as 110 degrees or more.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2v2j6d000g3b6rjwggwtrj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \ud83e\udd75 <a href=\"https:\/\/cnnweather.onelink.me\/KSXA\/sforlc5x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Get your heat forecast on CNN Weather for iPhone<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2v22a4000c3b6rpseq0bhp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The timing couldn\u2019t be worse. The heat is expected to peak during one of the busiest travel and outdoor celebration periods of the year, prompting cities to expand cooling centers, shorten parade routes and activate emergency response plans ahead of America\u2019s 250th birthday celebrations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2v22a4000d3b6raxkdh0o7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More than 160 million people are under a Level 3 of 4 \u201cmajor\u201d or Level 4 of 4 \u201cextreme\u201d heat risk through the end of the week, according to the National Weather Service. These categories are associated with a sharp increase in heat-related illnesses, especially during prolonged heat waves with little overnight relief.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2y5q4v001h3b6rjnanzk6c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The heat waves have been triggered by intense heat domes \u2014 stubborn areas of high pressure that lock hot air in place \u2014 and are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/26\/climate\/european-heat-wave-impossible-global-warming\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clearly supercharged by global warming<\/a>, experts say.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2v4u53000k3b6r13a6keaj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many cities, including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Raleigh, North Carolina, are opening cooling centers and expanding public resources as the dangerous heat settles in.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2v4ztc000m3b6rvkpattxk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The federal government is also preparing for the strain. The Department of Energy has issued emergency orders aimed at reducing the risk of power outages by increasing electricity generation within the PJM Interconnection grid, which serves much of the Mid-Atlantic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2v4ztc000n3b6ryb06gnbb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Philadelphia has declared a Heat Health Emergency through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/2026-06-30-health-department-declares-heat-health-emergency-wednesday-july-1-at-11-a-m-through-saturday-july-4-at-8-p-m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Saturday evening<\/a> and shortened the route for its July 4 parade. A ceremony featuring a live virtual address from the pope has been moved indoors, and officials have reduced hours for the city\u2019s World Cup Fan Festival ahead of Saturday\u2019s match between Paraguay and France.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2v4ztc000o3b6rred2mu05@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Washington, DC, has activated an Extreme Heat Alert through July 5 and is expanding cooling centers, hydration stations and emergency medical resources as hundreds of thousands of visitors descend on the nation\u2019s capital for holiday events. Organizers of National Mall celebrations are adding water stations, cooling tents and air-conditioned buses for attendees.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2v4ztc000p3b6rl6rxzujl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            New York City is opening hundreds of cooling centers and deploying mobile medical vans with water, sunscreen and wellness checks. If Thursday\u2019s heat index reaches 110 degrees, as forecast, it would join only three other days since records began in 1943 with a heat index that high. The city is also forecast to reach consecutive triple digits Thursday and Friday for the first time since 2011, according to the National Weather Service.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2v5flq000w3b6rkjsbl85a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Washington, DC, is forecast to reach 104 degrees Thursday and 105 Friday, just shy of its all-time record high of 106 degrees. July Fourth in the nation\u2019s capital is forecast to be the hottest on record at 102 degrees, beating the old record of 100 set in 1919. The 3-day period from Thursday to Saturday may be the hottest three-day stretch in DC since 1930, with highs in the low triple-digits each day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2y8lft001j3b6rhmeekvgs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Philadelphia could climb to 105 degrees Thursday, while Boston is forecast to top 100 degrees Thursday and soar to 104 Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2v5flq000x3b6rh9sspazq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In eastern Virginia, the weather service says this could be the region\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/mm6222a1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">most significant heat wave since July 2012<\/a>, which resulted in a dozen deaths in the state, among the more than 30 heat-related fatalities across four states.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2v5flq000y3b6rjg42iijt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The biggest concern isn\u2019t just the daytime heat. Warm, humid nights will provide little relief, with temperatures only falling into the 70s in many locations and struggling to drop below 80 degrees in urban areas. Without cooler nights, the body has little opportunity to recover before another day of dangerous heat.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2v5flq000z3b6rqk0efzds@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s the temperatures and the humidity that increase the health risks. High humidity keeps temperatures elevated and prevents sweat from evaporating efficiently, making it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/health\/2023\/06\/20\/extreme-heat-effects-body-contd-lon-orig.cnn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">harder for the body<\/a> to cool itself.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr2v5flq00103b6r6tyqvhhu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some relief is expected to begin arriving across parts of the Midwest later in the holiday weekend before gradually spreading into portions of the Northeast.
