\u201cLethal Weapon\u201d star Danny Glover<\/a> has revealed he has been living with Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/a> for years. <\/p>\n

In an interview with NBC\u2019s Lester Holt that aired on the \u201cToday\u201d show<\/a> on Wednesday, the 79-year-old actor and activist opened up about living with the disease. According to People<\/a>, he received his diagnosis in 2023, which was not long after he was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2022. <\/p>\n

\u201cI could live with it, in a sense,\u201d Glover says of his condition, which has been affecting his movement, speech and memory. \u201cI\u2019m sure as it advances, things are going to be different and changing.\u201d <\/p>\n

A neurodegenerative disease, Alzheimer\u2019s is a type of dementia<\/a> that affects memory, thinking and behavior and worsens over time, according to the Alzheimer\u2019s Assn<\/a>. Holt reports that more than 7 million Americans over 65 are living with Alzheimer\u2019s, with Black men suffering at a rate double the national average. <\/p>\n

Glover and his family say the Hollywood icon is sharing his story now to \u201chave ownership of his life\u201d and to help remove the stigma around the disease. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve got my back,\u201d Glover says of his family\u2019s support. <\/p>\n

Besides his portrayal of L.A. police Det. Roger Murtaugh in the \u201cLethal Weapon\u201d film series, Glover is known for roles in movies including \u201cPlaces in the Heart\u201d (1984), \u201cThe Color Purple\u201d (1985), \u201cTo Sleep With Anger\u201d (1990), \u201cAngels in the Outfield\u201d (1994), \u201cDreamgirls\u201d (2006) and \u201cThe Last Black Man in San Francisco\u201d (2019). He\u2019s also been a vocal advocate for social justice and humanitarian causes both in the U.S. and abroad. <\/p>\n

He was the recipient of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences\u2019 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2022.<\/p>\n
