U.S. soccer fans celebrate at FIFA Fan Festival after the U.S. scored a goal on July 1, 2026.<\/p>\n

Cornel Sims, a Houston resident, wore his red and white United States soccer jersey,<\/a> with a complementing navy blue bucket hat. Around his neck was a plastic Team USA gold chain and medallion.<\/p>\n

“This is amazing, seeing everyone come together,” he told Houston Public Media on Wednesday, standing in the shade of a massive, inflated soccer ball at the FIFA Fan Festival in East Downtown.<\/p>\n

For Sims, the moment \u2014 three days before the U.S. celebrates its semiquincentennial<\/a> on Saturday \u2014 was one to reflect on the sacrifices made to celebrate the moment. He served in the U.S. Army for six years as a sergeant, he said.<\/p>\n

“It’s amazing what people of the world can do together,” he said. “It’s amazing what people of the world can do together over one small leather soccer ball. … FIFA brought the world together. Just for one time, we just forgot all our problems.”<\/p>\n

The match on Wednesday in the San Francisco Bay Area was one to celebrate for American soccer fans: the U.S. national team won 2-0 against Bosnia and Herzegovina for its first World Cup knockout stage win in more than two decades \u2014 despite being down a player for much of the match.<\/p>\n

Though the U.S. won\u2019t play on Saturday, July 4, the day Houston hosts its final match as a World Cup host city, some fans found the moment to be one of American pride both for the team and the 250th anniversary of American independence. The U.S. will go on to play Belgium on Monday, July 6, in a round-of-16 match in Seattle.<\/p>\n

Sims wasn’t alone in celebrating American independence while celebrating the men’s national soccer team. Other fans were decked out in U.S. flags and memorabilia. Wilder Hanley was putting on some of his newly purchased U.S. soccer merchandise when he spoke with Houston Public Media.<\/p>\n

“Having this World Cup here on home soil, that’s probably never going to happen in the next 50 years, or something like that,” he said. “I’ve been waiting for this for 10 years, when it got announced.”<\/p>\n

Hanley was in the midst of a Tocquevillian journey across the U.S., venturing from city to city to experience the World Cup. He had been to Miami and Los Angeles; after Houston, he would go to Dallas.<\/p>\n

“I’ve met people from around the world,” he said. “That’s the best part about it, just meeting people from different parts of the globe. It’s the best I could ever imagine.”<\/p>\n

That message of unity is one many fans in Houston noted. Draped in an American flag and makeup, Collin Slatton said it was remarkable to celebrate the U.S. as its 250th anniversary approached.<\/p>\n

“Just to see all these people come together over the United States, just celebrate the U.S. \u2014 the U.S. team\u2014 and to see all these people from our country watch us, celebrate with us, celebrate this great country with us, it’s really good to see,” he said.<\/p>\n

Chidera Ugwokaegve and Osa Banigo, two Houston-area friends, said the World Cup brought the country together for a single cause.<\/p>\n

“I just feel like everyone is so together right now,” she said. “Everyone is like \u2018America, America, America, Team USA.\u2019 So, it’s just nice to see everyone united.”<\/p>\n

Banigo agreed.<\/p>\n
