{"id":739376,"date":"2026-07-02T17:55:07","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T17:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/739376\/"},"modified":"2026-07-02T17:55:07","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T17:55:07","slug":"metro-notes-giroux-laine-gustafsson-pro-hockey-rumors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/739376\/","title":{"rendered":"Metro Notes: Giroux, Laine, Gustafsson \u2013 Pro Hockey Rumors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although they failed in their pursuit of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carlsjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-07-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">John Carlson<\/a>, the Philadelphia Flyers are still in the mix for one of the better remaining unrestricted free agents. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/charlieo_conn\/status\/2072419301772935367?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">According to Charlie O\u2019Connor of PHLY Sports<\/a>, General Manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brierda01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-07-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Daniel Bri\u00e8re<\/a> told the media yesterday that the Flyers have had discussions with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/giroucl01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-07-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Claude Giroux<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, Giroux\u2019s connection to the Flyers organization needs no explanation. The former captain, Giroux, spent 15 years of his career in Philadelphia, scoring 291 goals and 900 points in 1,000 games, helping the franchise reach its most recent Stanley Cup Final in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Even at 38, Giroux remains one of the best centers in the game, nearly averaging a 60.0% faceoff rate throughout his time with the Ottawa Senators. If <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/z\/zegratr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-07-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trevor Zegras<\/a> is willing to move back to the wing, Giroux could be a great addition, even outside of the nostalgia, for the Flyers\u2019 middle six.<\/p>\n<p>Additional notes from the Metro Division:<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/stefen_rosner\/status\/2072415986406363165?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">According to Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News<\/a>, the New York Islanders are one of several teams that have expressed interest in free agent winger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lainepa01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-07-02_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Patrik Laine<\/a>. Assuming he can remain healthy, which is a risky assumption, Laine to the Islanders makes a lot of sense. He wouldn\u2019t cost too much, and as a powerplay specialist, could certainly help a New York powerplay that finished 30th in the league last season. Unfortunately, Laine doesn\u2019t score too much at even strength, meaning he wouldn\u2019t help the Islanders much in that regard.<br \/>\nSticking with the Islanders, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/stefen_rosner\/status\/2072703374961627426?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rosner also provided an updat<\/a>e on New York\u2019s first-round pick from the 2026 NHL Draft. According to Rosner, defenseman <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eliteprospects.com\/player\/886275\/malte-gustafsson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Malte Gustafsson<\/a>, whom the Islanders selected with the 13th overall pick, plans to come to North America after the 2026-27 campaign.
