Canadian rock legend Bryan Adams has penned an elbows-up anthem celebrating the nation and taking aim at U.S. President Donald Trump in his new song, 51st State.<\/p>\n

Singing straight from the heart with words that cut like a knife, Mr. Adams released the song in the lead-up to Canada Day. <\/p>\n

\u201cLet me give it to you straight, when you\u2019re talking \u2018bout my home you better show some respect,\u201d Mr. Adams sings. <\/p>\n

Those lyrics may seem directed at anyone who dares to diss the Great White North, but Mr. Adams clearly has Donald Trump in his sights, even though the President is never referred to by name.<\/p>\n

Luke Doucet, guitarist for hire, had just three days to learn Bryan Adams\u2019s entire set list<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cSo let me give it to you straight, mister. You might have too much on your plate. Go and load us up with tariffs, but we\u2019ll never be the 51st state,\u201d goes the pugnacious protest song. <\/p>\n

Mr. Adams, 66, is currently on his Roll With the Punches world tour<\/a>, which will see him play several dates across the U.S. later this month and through August. <\/p>\n

From there, the tour arrives in Quebec in late August, and moves west, with performances in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C. <\/p>\n

The 15 Canadian dates on the tour include a stop in Kingston, where the singer was born. <\/p>\n

Mr. Adams explained his motivations for writing the song on his website. <\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to write something about Canada because Canada is home,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is more that binds us than divides us. This is a tribute to the pride and spirit of my fellow Canadians \u2013 the rest is just noise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Donald Trump first suggested Canada should become America\u2019s 51st state during a meeting with then-prime minister Justin Trudeau at Mr. Trump\u2019s Mar-a-Lago resort.<\/p>\n

The President has mused about that possibility repeatedly since then, and has upended the friendly relationship between Canada and the U.S. with new tariffs on a range of Canadian imports. <\/p>\n

Mr. Adams reminds the President our two countries were once besties, and now that things are testy, Mr. Trump is going to have to deal with strong-hearted Canucks ready to drop gloves for freedom if he ever decides to mess with thee. <\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe you\u2019ve forgotten, maybe you just don\u2019t care, but we always stood beside you for that liberty we share,\u201d Mr. Adams sings. \u201cYou can push us to the brink, but where the open road divides, you\u2019ll find a wall of maple with us on the other side.\u201d <\/p>\n
