(WKRC)

Perry said someone who lives on the street posted a photo on social media last weekend that sparked the effort to find and help it, but searchers say time could be running out.

“The biggest concern at the moment is it was seen this morning still with a jug on its head. With this temperature and lack of ability to eat, the timing is getting pretty crucial,” said Perry.

Perry has experience searching for animals because he volunteers with Red Oak Animal Rescue. He got involved after seeing the post on Sunday. Perry said he was there when Reaves Recovery and Rescue joined the effort, using drones on Monday night.

“We got a very brief sighting of the animal. It had a really strong heat signature. You could see the jug on its head, but it was quite late at night and it was traveling with at least what we think is a pack of coyotes,” said Perry.

Some people in the original neighborhood think the animal might be a coyote, but Perry said it doesn’t matter if it’s a dog or a coyote; it still needs help.

Alecia Salus, owner of Good Paws Training, Rescue & Recovery, said she got involved Monday night and has taken a lead role in the effort.

Multiple searches have taken place this week without success, but a more coordinated search was planned for Thursday night. Salus said fencing was donated from Eads Fence Company in Loveland so a perimeter could be set up.

“This is a very unique case. He more than likely will not go into a typical trap,” said Salus. “The risk of setting up traps is the fact that there is such a large coyote pack right next to a neighborhood, and baiting a trap can have negative consequences of bringing them, the coyotes, forward, and that is not a chance that we want to take. Without a fence perimeter, we more than likely will not catch him.”

Salus said the situation does change some if the animal is a coyote.

“If it is a coyote, which some of the neighbors are insisting it is, mainly because it’s running with this pack, it could also be a coy-dog, which is a coyote-domestic dog mix,” said Salus. “If he stays too close to the den and there are pups in this den, the adults are going to be a little more protective at this point. They also probably are really hurting for food and water right now themselves. So, there is a higher risk too if this dog is a coy dog.”

She urged people not to conduct their own searches.

“We absolutely ask the community not to just show up here. When there are more people on the ground, you are scaring him back further into the woods, and we need him out of the woods,” said Salus.

Perry warned that the conditions can also be dangerous for people who are not experienced searchers.

<img decoding="async" alt="A dog, or possibly a coyote, with its head stuck in a jar has prompted a growing search effort in Delhi Township, drawing in dozens of neighbors and experienced animal rescuers as concerns rise about how long the animal can survive in its current state. (WKRC)

“Once you’re actually in there, visibility is really poor. The temperature today is warm. Admittedly, it is a little bit cooler in the woods, but it’s still life-threatening if you can’t breathe or drink,” said Perry.

JarHead was spotted again Thursday morning on Dengail Drive, not far from the original street it was seen off of. That’s where the search started again.

“Given this heat index, I am extremely surprised that this dog is alive,” said Salus.

Salus is asking people message her on Facebook if they would like to help. A list is growing of people who want to volunteer or contribute. Some items people can donate are batteries, water, and trail cameras.

She said searchers also need a lot of hope.

“Hope for the best for this poor dog. It has been a long time of him suffering, so we want to get him home safe,” said Salus.

DELHI TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) – A dog, or possibly a coyote, with its head stuck in a jar…

[51
79,201
post-740399","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-science","tag-wildlife
["GET
