While some local leaders are grinning and bearing the extra costs, others have canceled displays altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Henke, director of parks and recreation for Kirkwood, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/crime\/missouri-st-louis-baby-shooting-kiyomi-parker-b3005591.html\">Missouri<\/a>, told The Independent that both tariffs and excitement around 250th celebrations helped double the price of the St. Louis suburb\u2019s typical $25,000 fireworks show.<\/p>\n<p>He estimated that the Trump administration\u2019s tariffs on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-birthright-citizenship-response-supreme-court-ruling-b3006207.html\">China<\/a>, which exports most of the consumer fireworks used in the U.S., increased costs by up to 30 percent. Some fireworks have risen in price by 40 percent, according to industry insiders. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re also getting a bigger show, which is costing quite a bit more than previous years, because they\u2019re asking for it,\u201d Henke said of the buzz from local leaders around <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/ohio-backyard-firework-accidents-july-fourth-b3006017.html\">America\u2019s landmark birthday<\/a>. \u201cNot just an increase in the tariffs, but they wanted a bigger show, so I\u2019m giving them a bigger show because of America 250.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Untitled-design-(16).png\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"In cities and towns across the country, double-digit tariffs have jacked up the price of fireworks ahead of this weekend. While some local leaders are grinning and bearing the extra costs, others have canceled displays altogether (Getty)<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/download.-3..jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Fireworks companies say they have had to turn away some smaller customers amid surging demand because of 250th anniversary celebrations\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Fireworks companies say they have had to turn away some smaller customers amid surging demand because of 250th anniversary celebrations (AP)<\/p>\n<p>Usually, the city raises about half the funds to cover its fireworks show from private sponsors, but this time around community members and businesses kicked in about $45,000 of the show\u2019s roughly $50,000 budget, Henke said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFortunately for us, we have some very strong supporters in the community,\u201d he said of the expanded show, which will boast a supersized grand finale. <\/p>\n<p>Barrett Gray, who is helping plan Fourth of July celebrations in Deer Isle and Stonington, Maine, saw an even steeper increase in prices on fireworks, which cost about $15,000 this year. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur fireworks are doubling this year due to tariffs mostly,\u201d he told The Independent. \u201cWe have the money for this year\u2019s fireworks, but if we\u2019re unable to raise more money, it will certainly affect what next year\u2019s fireworks display looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The regional chamber of commerce had to tap its reserves to foot its share of the increased bill to keep the Independence Day spectacle alive in the scenic coastal area, which has about 3,500 full-time residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the fireworks are a huge part of our Fourth of July festivities,\u201d Gray added. \u201cI would love to keep the tradition going. I\u2019ve lived here all my life. I\u2019m almost 50. It\u2019s something that we always look forward to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2278350103...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Business owners in Deer Isle and Stonington, Maine, had to tap their reserves to cover fireworks that have doubled in price since last year\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Business owners in Deer Isle and Stonington, Maine, had to tap their reserves to cover fireworks that have doubled in price since last year (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Other small towns haven\u2019t fared so well.<\/p>\n<p>Faced with an influx of 250th anniversary-inspired orders, some fireworks vendors have turned away smaller customers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do turn away people every year, however, this year it&#8217;s been a little bit more than normal,&#8221; Tyler Wheat, president of the Texas-based Illumination Fireworks, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/06\/29\/usa-250-fireworks-small-town-costs\">told Axios<\/a>. &#8220;The amount of cities we have in Texas that do have large and middle-sized budgets, we have to put those as priority, because obviously we&#8217;re a business, we have to make profit.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe excitement around America&#8217;s 250th is unlike anything we&#8217;ve seen in our six generations in this business,\u201d Phil Grucci, CEO of Fireworks By Grucci, told The Independent in a statement, as his company prepares to anchor shows across the country, including a series of launches in Las Vegas that are expected to be the largest in the country. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2283661779...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"President Trump has made large-scale Independence Day celebrations for America\u2019s 250th anniversary a key priority in his second term\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>President Trump has made large-scale Independence Day celebrations for America\u2019s 250th anniversary a key priority in his second term (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmericans have increased the size of their performances dramatically,\u201d he added. \u201cEveryone wants to mark this milestone in a meaningful way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For some towns, the costs of a fireworks show in this economic climate just couldn\u2019t be justified.<\/p>\n<p>Hinesberg, Vermont (population: 4,698), canceled its fireworks this year when its main vendor raised prices to a $20,000 minimum <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sevendaysvt.com\/news\/economy\/soaring-fireworks-costs-force-towns-to-cancel-or-pony-up\/#:~:text=At%20least%20one%20town%2C%20Hinesburg,the%20bicentennial%20celebration%20in%201976.\">to compensate for higher import costs<\/a>. Town leaders then decided against a fireworks show, as residents worried they would be on the hook for the increased price tag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody\u2019s disappointed,\u201d Roger Kohn, a local attorney serving as grand marshal in the town\u2019s Fourth of July parade, told The Independent. \u201cThey like to have fireworks on the Fourth. But people were very concerned about property taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other areas were hit with more quotidian challenges ahead of the Fourth of July. St. Louis County, Missouri, scrapped its long-running JB Blast fireworks event because of budget concerns and difficulty raising enough sponsor dollars for the show, which typically costs the county about $46,000. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2260887315...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"China makes most of the fireworks used in the U.S., leaving the industry \u2014 and American customers \u2014 vulnerable to U.S. tariffs\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>China makes most of the fireworks used in the U.S., leaving the industry \u2014 and American customers \u2014 vulnerable to U.S. tariffs (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very costly event to put on, regardless of tariffs,\u201d county parks public information manager Alyssa Hui-Anderson told The Independent.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, one of multiple 250th anniversary-themed fireworks show planned above the Las Vegas Strip <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.8newsnow.com\/news\/local-news\/america-250-fireworks-on-las-vegas-strip-postponed-due-to-high-winds\/\">was temporarily postponed<\/a> Saturday due to high winds, though the display <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/news\/news-columns\/road-warrior\/las-vegas-valley-traffic-to-boom-with-busy-fourth-of-july-travelers-3844111\/\">went up the following night<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>In this regard, event organizers are just like the president, whose Independence Day plans have faced one issue after another. His <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/trump-state-fair-america-250-fail-b3006947.html\">Great American State Fair on the National Mall<\/a> in Washington has struggled to attract large crowds, while his Fourth of July-inspired renovation of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-reflecting-pool-arrest-felony-b3007867.html\">nearby Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool<\/a> has been marred with algae blooms and cracking construction materials. (Ironically, a planned fireworks launch site around the renovation has spared the president further embarrassment for now; <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/fence-reflecting-pool-trump-crack-algae-b3001742.html\">chain-link fences now circle the Reflecting Pool<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Kohn, the Vermont attorney, said he had other America-related concerns as the Fourth of July approaches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very concerned about the divisiveness within the country at the present,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it\u2019s most unfortunate.
