NEWPORT, Carteret County — An osprey is receiving care after being found sitting in the middle of a road following a likely collision with a vehicle.

According to OWLS Wildlife Center, a Good Samaritan stopped after noticing the bird needed help and brought it to the center for treatment.

Wildlife officials said the osprey is being examined, given supportive care and monitored closely while staff work to determine the full extent of its injuries.

The center said the first 24 to 48 hours are often the most critical for birds that have experienced trauma.

Ospreys are birds of prey known for diving feet-first into the water to catch fish. OWLS Wildlife Center said they play an important role in coastal ecosystems but face dangers from vehicle strikes, fishing line, habitat loss and other human-related hazards.

The center said the osprey’s future is still uncertain, but it is safe, warm and receiving care because someone stopped to help.

OWLS Wildlife Center is reminding people to slow down in areas where wildlife is active. If you see an injured bird of prey, officials say not to approach it with bare hands and instead contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for guidance.

The center said it will share updates as it learns more about the osprey’s condition.

NEWPORT, Carteret County — An osprey is receiving care after being found sitting in the middle of a…

[51
79,201
post-742008","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-science","tag-wildlife
["GET
