Berry Sports Center. As temperatures continue to rise and New England faces a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/extreme-heat-watch-warning-wave-emergency-boston-weather-forecast\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heat-wave<\/a> in the coming weekend, though, some are concerned about their ability to safely and comfortably exercise in the satellite gym.<\/p>\n<p>Jaya Miller \u201928 said she went to the gym for a workout on July 1st at 8:30 a.m. and it felt \u201chotter inside than outside, and it was 80 degrees outside.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel that the gym is a space you should be able to use when it\u2019s too hot to exercise outside \u2014 effective AC in the summer is necessary,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another student, Claire Maher \u201928, jokingly said that she found the gym to be \u201cthe hottest place on campus and maybe the whole planet.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other students discussed grievances about limited space and the amount of available weight machines in the facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve overemphasized the cardio machines,\u201d Teddy Choyt \u201928 said. \u201cThere are way too few [benches] for everyone to comfortably fit, \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dartmouth Athletics executive associate athletics director for business strategy and operations J.B. Weber wrote in an email statement that the equipment of the Berry center is \u201climited\u201d by \u201csafety considerations inherent to the use of a facility that was not designed to be a fitness center space.\u201d They stated that the temporary facility in Berry is \u201cnot designed\u201d for heavy weightlifting workouts. Instead, the Leverone Fieldhouse is open to students with limited hours on weekdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand though that working out, especially in these extreme heat conditions, may be unpleasant, so we urge everyone to stay safe and hydrated,\u201d Weber said. \u201cThere are large fans in both spaces to help with airflow in both Berry and Leverone for which the latter has a built-in system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the hours of the Fieldhouse, Choyt added that the limited time slot \u201caren\u2019t hours that even remotely work for my schedule, and it completely discourages me from going there at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Student body vice president Margaret de la Fuente \u201927 wrote in an email statement that the Dartmouth Student Government \u2014 which worked to secure student access to the temporary Berry facility in the spring \u2014 has heard concerns about heat and the general conditions of the satellite gym and is working to \u201cgather additional feedback and better understand students\u2019 experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we have gathered that feedback, we plan to share it with Dartmouth Athletics and Recreation and work collaboratively with them on any issues that need to be addressed,\u201d de la Fuente said. \u201cWe encourage students using the satellite gym to continue sharing their experiences with DSG.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some individuals, like Atticus Belcher \u201928, expressed gratitude for having an alternative option while the Lewinstein Athletic Center is closed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re trying to improve the old gym, and the fact that they were able to secure the squash courts seems pretty creative and competent of the people who run wellness,\u201d Belcher said. \u201cI will say the heat sucks, but that\u2019s just the nature of summer in Hanover.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Since the Lewinstein Athletic Center fully closed for renovations on June 15th, students on campus this summer have&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":742240,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[62],"tags":[337,97],"class_list":["post-742239","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fitness","tag-fitness","tag-health"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/742239","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=742239"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/742239\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/742240"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=742239"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=742239"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=742239"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
