BOISE, ID (CBS2) — Idaho’s snowpack is near record lows after an abnormally warm winter, and Boise leaders are moving early to prepare for worsening drought conditions already affecting much of the state.

Most of Idaho is currently in a drought, with much of southwestern Idaho characterized as being in an “exceptional drought” by the federal drought index. Even if the worst effects have not yet been felt, the city of Boise took action this week to stay ahead of the coming dry season. On Tuesday, the city adopted a Drought Emergency Ordinance, describing it as a proactive step to protect the water supply in a year with near record-low snowpack.

The ordinance outlines a phased response for how the city would respond to a drought emergency. Potential responses range from voluntary conservation guidelines to mandatory watering restrictions for irrigation and recreation.

The ordinance applies only to customers of the city’s public drinking water system. People with private wells, or those who use canal water or irrigation providers, are not affected.

City officials are advising residents to use water cautiously as summer temperatures rise. Demand on the city’s public water system nearly triples during the hottest summer months.

The city of Boise has been contacted for clarity on the ordinance and how it would progress through the stages toward recreational water restrictions.

BOISE, ID (CBS2) — Idaho’s snowpack is near record lows after an abnormally warm winter, and Boise leaders…

[47
192,79
post-742255","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science
["GET
