AP Photo\/Maja Smiejkowska<\/p>\n<p>The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion risks up to a $72,000 fine for not meeting her media obligations, according to the \u201cMedia Opportunities\u201d section of the Grand Slam Rule Book, unless she can prove extenuating circumstances, such as injury or illness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Serena similarly did not speak to reporters after she <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/30\/sports\/serena-williams-wimbledon-dream-dashed-by-maya-joint\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost to Maya Joint, 3-6, 7-6 (8), 3-6<\/a> in the first round, on June 30.<\/p>\n<p>She later <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/01\/sports\/reason-for-serena-williams-snubbing-wimbledon-media-revealed-after-backlash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cited a knee injury <\/a>per her agent, Jill Smoller, with injured players allowed to forego media responsibilities. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSerena tweaked her knee at the end of the first set and was therefore excused from her media obligations by the Wimbledon and WTA medical teams,\u201d Smoller told The Times, a British newspaper. \u201cShe left site that night unaided and is doing everything she can to be ready for her doubles match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serena did, however, provide a brief statement following her return to singles play after nearly four years away.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39886666\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2026-england-club-london-serenas-132900479.jpg\" alt=\"Serena Williams in a white tennis outfit with a tennis racket, walking on court, with spectators in the background.\" class=\"wp-image-39886666\"  \/>Serena Williams at Wimbledon earlier this year. Walking out was amazing.
