Sparks literally flew after Friday night\u2019s Angel City FC home game against the Orlando Pride when a postgame fireworks show malfunctioned, enveloping the pitch in smoke as projectiles flew into the stands where fans were watching.<\/p>\n
An announced crowd of 13,900 watched ACFC kick off the second half of the NWSL season with a 2-0 victory over the Pride in its first game under interim head coach Leif Gunnar Smerud. Then came a pre-Independence Day fireworks show, launched from center pitch on BMO Stadium\u2019s grass field, that left fans scrambling for safety.<\/p>\n
A thick haze of pyrotechnic smoke accumulated by the time a remix of Kanye West\u2019s \u201cAll of the Lights\u201d ushered in the climax of the spectacle. As the fireworks rapid-fired into the sky, several misfired sideways rather than overhead. Video captured by fans<\/a> and posted on social media<\/a> showed projectiles ricocheting off the field and into the stands. Amid the chaos, some fans ducked for cover, while others stayed put and laughed in disbelief.<\/p>\n The Los Angeles Fire Department did not respond to any calls or treat any injuries at BMO Stadium on Friday night, a spokesperson told The Athletic.<\/p>\n A statement released by Angel City FC indicated that those in attendance were \u201cable to depart safely.\u201d A team spokesperson later told The Athletic that as of Saturday night, the club was not aware of any serious injuries resulting from the incident.<\/p>\n \u201cA fireworks malfunction did occur during last night\u2019s post-match celebration at Angel City FC\u2019s game vs. Orlando at BMO Stadium,\u201d a statement from ACFC reads. \u201cOur medical and safety teams were on site and ready to respond.
