NEW YORK \u2013 Galveston\u2019s Tall Ship Elissa spent the Fourth of July week in rare company Saturday, slipping into New York Harbor as part of the Sail4th 250 Parade of Sail \u2014 a centerpiece event tied to the national celebrations surrounding the United States\u2019 250th anniversary.<\/p>\n
For Texans, it\u2019s a standout moment: Elissa isn\u2019t a themed attraction or a modern rebuild. She\u2019s the Official Tall Ship of Texas, maintained to operate as a real sailing vessel, and her appearance in New York marked the ship\u2019s first visit to the city since 1986.<\/p>\n
Why Elissa matters to Texas<\/p>\n
Elissa\u2019s story is rooted in Galveston, where the ship is operated by the Galveston Historical Foundation and serves as a working centerpiece of the city\u2019s historic seaport.<\/p>\n
Galveston\u2019s history is inseparable from the water \u2014 from commerce and shipbuilding to the port\u2019s role in connecting Texas with the rest of the world.
