It was, by all accounts, the wedding of the decade. Taylor Swift<\/a>, the world\u2019s biggest pop star, married her \u201cguy on the Chiefs\u201d, Travis Kelce<\/a>, in a ceremony shrouded in secrecy\u2026 which has still managed to be the most talked-about nuptials outside of a royal marriage<\/a>. <\/p>\n

This was a joyous occasion for Swift, 36, not least as an artist who has documented her love life \u2013 traversing early romances, would-be suitors, and heartbreak after heartbreak <\/a>\u2013 through her songwriting for more than two decades.<\/p>\n

Some of her most famous songs are said to have been inspired by exes such as Harry Styles<\/a>, whose rumoured fiancee Zoe Kravitz<\/a> was among the guests at her wedding to Kelce<\/a> (Styles himself was reportedly invited too, but he was unable to attend as he concluded his record-breaking residency at Wembley Stadium<\/a>). <\/p>\n

Swift\u2019s romantic past has also involved the actor Tom Hiddleston, Scottish DJ Calvin Harris and Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Her longest relationship was with British actor Joe Alwyn, who is widely believed to have inspired the songs on her 2017 album Reputation, 2019\u2019s Lover, her 2020 twin albums Folklore and Evermore and 2022\u2019s Midnights. Her 2024 album, The Tortured Poets Department, is believed to have been written in the wake of her split from Alwyn as well as her brief dalliance with The 1975\u2019s frontman Matty Healy<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Rumours first emerged that she was dating NFL star Kelce<\/a>, 36, in the summer of 2023, not long after he shared that he\u2019d tried to give the pop star a friendship bracelet (a tradition at her concerts) while attending one of her Eras Tour shows. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was disappointed that she doesn\u2019t talk before or after her shows\u2026 but I wanted to give Taylor Swift [a bracelet] with my number on it,\u201d he told brother Jason on their New Heights podcast.<\/p>\n

Word clearly got back to Swift, however, and they went public when Swift supported Kelce as the Kansas City Chiefs took on the Chicago Bears in September that year. \u201cBy the time I went to that first game, we were a couple,\u201d Swift told Time. \u201cI think some people think they saw our first date at that game? We would never be psychotic enough to hard-launch a first date.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swift went on to cheer Kelce on at further games, while the Chiefs star returned the support by showing up to several more of her shows. The couple came close to breaking the internet when the \u201cBlank Space\u201d singer met him on the field after the Chiefs won the 2024 Super Bowl, with Kelce telling her \u201cI love you\u201d and sharing a kiss with her amid a shower of confetti, surrounded by his cheering team and their loved ones.<\/p>\n

Swift\u2019s relationship with Kelce was markedly different from many of her past romances<\/a>, as they happily championed each other in public and attended events together. Swift even made a headline-generating appearance on his podcast New Heights, on which she announced her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, reflected on her Eras Tour, and opened up about her life with Kelce. \u201cThis felt more like I was in an Eighties John Hughes movie and he was just like, standing outside of my window with a boombox,\u201d she said of the moment Kelce said he wanted to date her. \u201cI was like, \u2018if this guy isn\u2019t crazy, this is sort of what I\u2019ve been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager.\u2019\u201d Kelce noted the more \u201cupbeat\u201d tone of The Life of a Showgirl, to which she responded, \u201clife is more upbeat\u201d.<\/p>\n

Kelce\u2019s family, too, made no secret of the fact that they were fans of the couple: his father, Ed Kelce, said Swift was the reason for his son\u2019s happiness and said they were two people \u201cobviously very much in love\u201d, while his mum Donna has championed Swift as an artist, calling her \u201ca very talented woman\u201d. <\/p>\n

Swift and Kelce announced their engagement in August of last year<\/a>, posting photos of an elaborate setup in which the happy couple were surrounded by flowers. \u201cYour English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,\u201d they captioned the post. There was a close-up of Swift\u2019s enormous engagement ring, at the centre of which sat an old mine-cut diamond, bezel-set in yellow gold, designed by Kelce himself with Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry \u2013 experts told The Independent<\/a> they estimated its price to be anything between $1.5m to $2m.<\/p>\n

After the announcement, a frenzy of speculation began over everything from what dress Swift would wear to their chosen venue. When Madison Square Garden (MSG) was floated as a contender \u2013 with rumours the wedding would place over the Fourth of July weekend \u2013 many eyebrows were raised. Surely the couple would choose somewhere more private? Indeed, many fans were convinced Swift, so fond of pulling the wool over the world\u2019s eyes, had created a red herring to distract from a more intimate ceremony taking place elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Yet others pointed out the many attributes MSG offered, from the essential security and privacy to the fact that their 1,000-strong guestlist would be able to get there without difficulty: \u201cImagine the carbon footprint\u2026 I\u2019m so glad she didn\u2019t do a destination wedding,\u201d Harvard professor and Swift expert Stephanie Burt told The Independent this week. <\/p>\n

And the wedding did indeed take place at MSG, with guests \u2013 including many of the world\u2019s most recognisable faces, from Hollywood stars to music titans and sporting legends \u2013 first attending a rehearsal dinner on Thursday, before the main event on Friday 3 July. Security was fierce, with tents erected outside the venue to obscure guests as they arrived and then left, bleary-eyed, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Among the myriad celebrities spotted <\/a>were Hugh Grant, Dakota Johnson, Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Selena Gomez, Ed Sheeran and his wife Cherry Seaborn, Millie Bobby Brown, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lopez, Julianne Moore, Graham Norton, Lena Dunham, the Haim sisters, Jennifer Lawrence, Jack Antonoff, Ben Stiller, Miranda Lambert, Steven Spielberg, and Swift\u2019s publicist Tree Paine.<\/p>\n

Some of the star guests also performed live at the ceremony. Paul McCartney serenaded guests with the Beatles\u2019 1963 classic \u201cI Want to Hold Your Hand\u201d <\/a>at the reception, People reported, while Stevie Nicks and Bon Jovi are also believed to have performed. The huge event is said to have been planned with the help of elusive celebrity wedding planner Mark Seed, who was behind the celebrations for Swift\u2019s frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff and his wife, actor Margaret Qualley, among others. Previous clients have hailed Seed as a \u201cgenius\u201d and someone who is \u201cincapable of panic\u201d, while one source told Page Six that he can \u201cbuild something out of nothing\u201d.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Swift\u2019s representative shared a few key details with The Independent immediately after the ceremony had concluded: that she chose not to have a bridal party, instead asking her brother, Austin, to be her \u201cman of honour\u201d. Kelce had his brother, Jason, as best man, while the couple\u2019s ceremony was officiated by none other than comedian and actor Adam Sandler<\/a>, a longtime friend and champion of Swift\u2019s. Around 7.30pm on Friday, LED signs outside the venue read \u201cJUST&T MARRIED!\u201d The \u201cT&T\u201d is a nod to their shared first initial, which has been featured on guest gifts for the event.<\/p>\n

After much speculation, it was also confirmed by Swift\u2019s representative that both her and Kelce\u2019s wedding looks were created by Christian Dior<\/a> Haute Couture, designed by Jonathan Anderson<\/a>, creative director of Dior Women\u2019s, Men\u2019s and Haute Couture Collections, \u201cin close collaboration with the Bride and Groom\u201d.<\/p>\n

Swift\u2019s fans are still waiting with bated breath for official photos from the ceremony. In the meantime, and in spite of rumoured non-disclosure agreements signed before the nuptials, some of her guests have been unable to hold back from sharing a few snippets from the occasion, including that Swift\u2019s friend Lena Dunham left fans gasping with her outrageous wedding speech<\/a>. Country star Maren Morris shared a photo of a lace handkerchief embroidered with the couple\u2019s initials, \u201cT\u201d and \u201cT\u201d, intertwined with love hearts and embellished with their wedding date and location of New York City.
