{"id":746400,"date":"2026-07-06T12:08:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T12:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/746400\/"},"modified":"2026-07-06T12:08:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T12:08:11","slug":"scientists-calculate-when-the-last-plants-on-earth-will-die-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/746400\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists Calculate When The Last Plants on Earth Will Die : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If potted plants always seem to die under your care, you can take solace in knowing that plantkind as a whole will probably survive for a very long time.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, they might still be around when the Sun <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/could-a-rogue-star-save-us-from-our-own-extinction\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">boils the oceans<\/a> off the surface of Earth.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2025JD045586\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new paper<\/a> from two planetary scientists who used a series of models to estimate the maximum lifetime of Earth&#8217;s vegetative biosphere \u2013 that is, its plant life.<\/p>\n<p>Their simulated scenarios, detailed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2025JD045586\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres<\/a>, suggest that the last plant on Earth might not wither and die until 1.87 billion years from now.<\/p>\n<p>By then, the Sun will shine about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/watch-here-s-how-the-sun-will-eventually-destroy-earth\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">20 percent brighter<\/a>, which will probably either bake or choke plant life out of existence. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That said, there could be an asterisk at the end of that sentence, which potentially allows plants (and other kinds of life) to persist beyond that point.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"711\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/biosphere.png\" alt=\"Simulations Suggest When The Last Plants on Earth Will Die\" class=\"wp-image-207311\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A NASA visualization of Earth&#8217;s biosphere, measured using satellite data. <a href=\"https:\/\/svs.gsfc.nasa.gov\/4596\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">(NASA\/Goddard Space Flight Center, The SeaWiFS Project and GeoEye, SVS)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Plants comprise about <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.1711842115\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">80 percent of all biomass<\/a> on the planet \u2013 so Earth would do well to keep providing them with abundant sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. But how long can it reasonably do so?<\/p>\n<p>And how long before plants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/photosynthesis-may-be-failing-in-the-tropics-as-temperatures-soar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reach their limit<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>To find out, astrobiologist Jacob Haqq-Misra and planetary climate scientist Eric Wolf from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluemarblespace.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Marble Space<\/a>, a nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, ran a series of simulations.<\/p>\n<p>The pair used a 3D model to calculate what would happen to Earth&#8217;s climate over the next 2 billion years. It was designed to account for how much the Sun is predicted to brighten over that time, as well as changes in the concentration of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/quantum-phenomenon-explains-tiny-molecules-huge-impact-on-global-warming\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1783339689_106_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>If you ignore the outlier that is human-induced CO2 emissions, Earth&#8217;s natural <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carbonate%E2%80%93silicate_cycle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carbonate-silicate cycle<\/a> sees CO2 constantly removed from the atmosphere into the oceans, where it is gradually deposited onto the seafloor, converted into rock, and eventually released back into the atmosphere through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/humans-produce-100x-more-co2-than-all-volcanoes-combined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">volcanic eruptions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-cycle-deep-within-earths-crust-may-affect-climate-more-than-we-thought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plate tectonics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s unclear how strongly this kind of weathering depends on the surface temperature \u2013 so the researchers simulated both strong and weak versions of the cycle.<\/p>\n<p>In the strong weathering model, Earth&#8217;s surface temperature remains relatively stable, but the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere steadily drops. Under this scenario, plants would be starved of carbon, killing off the vegetative biosphere around 1.84 billion years from now.<\/p>\n<p>In the weak weathering model, however, CO2 levels stay steady, but the temperature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/worlds-fastest-warming-continent-swelters-under-record-heat-dome\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continues to climb<\/a>. Eventually, the mean temperature on Earth hits about 65 degrees Celsius (150 degrees Fahrenheit), at which point no land plants could survive.<\/p>\n<p>This scenario puts the maximum lifetime of plants on Earth at around 1.87 billion years in the future \u2013 longer than most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-calculated-the-ultimate-lifespan-of-earths-biosphere\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous studies<\/a> have calculated.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"460\" height=\"573\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-01-at-6.54.32-pm.png\" alt=\"Simulations Suggest When The Last Plants on Earth Will Die\" class=\"wp-image-207308\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Diagrams illustrating the maximum lifespan of Earth&#8217;s vegetative biosphere under different scenarios. (Haqq-Misra &amp; Wolf, JGR Atmos., 2026)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It suggests the possibility that Earth&#8217;s photosynthetic biosphere could remain viable in some form up to the point at which Earth begins to lose its water,&#8221; the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2025JD045586\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If this is the case, then the maximum lifetime of Earth&#8217;s vegetative biosphere is comparable to the lifetime of Earth&#8217;s oceans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, there&#8217;s a very intriguing caveat to the whole study: These simulations were conducted without accounting for any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/ferns-can-evolve-backwards-challenging-a-common-assumption-on-life\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">evolution in plant life<\/a> or any potential technological advances made by humans (or another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/humanity-won-t-hear-from-aliens-for-400-000-years-scientists-say\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intelligent civilization<\/a> that may arise in the distant future).<\/p>\n<p>Either or both of these factors could extend how long plants survive on \u2013 or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-plant-is-so-extreme-scientists-think-it-could-thrive-on-mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">importantly, off<\/a> \u2013 Earth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can imagine a scenario in which plants evolve the ability to regulate their temperature and pressure, perhaps in response to changing climates,&#8221; the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2025JD045586\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the sun brightens, plants may favor an aerial environment and adapt accordingly, spreading to high\u2010altitude terrain and into the stratosphere and beyond. From Earth&#8217;s upper atmosphere, life could continue to disperse to low\u2010gravity objects like comets and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/moon\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73106\" data-postid=\"207298\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">the Moon<\/a> as well as into free\u2010floating space.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-201722\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Possible technological interventions sound very sci-fi. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dimming-the-sun-is-not-safe-scientists-warn-its-also-impractical\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Geoengineering methods<\/a>, such as reflective aerosols in the upper atmosphere or sunshades in orbit, could cool Earth in the face of increasing sunlight, but the consequences of those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-warn-dimming-the-sun-is-simply-too-dangerous-heres-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">risky strategies<\/a> aren&#8217;t fully understood.<\/p>\n<p>Even more speculative ideas could include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-rocket-scientist-explains-how-we-could-hypothetically-move-the-planet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pushing Earth itself<\/a> into a more distant orbit, or <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/mnras\/stad1617\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">manipulating the mass of the Sun<\/a> to keep it shining at a steady brightness and temperature.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/plants-stopped-thriving-when-earth-warmed-56-million-years-ago\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Plants Stopped Thriving When Earth Warmed 56 Million Years Ago<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course it&#8217;s impossible to know for sure what the future holds, but it&#8217;s kind of comforting to think that Earth could still be green in more than a billion years&#8217; time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Life on Earth is resilient, and limits posed by thermal stress or CO2 starvation may only reflect our observations of the biosphere today rather than hard limits on how the biosphere may evolve,&#8221; the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2025JD045586\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conclude<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We suggest that the default story for our planet&#8217;s future is that life will survive at least as long as Earth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The research was published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2025JD045586\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-sciencealert-light-gray-background-color has-background\">This article was fact-checked by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/michaelirving\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Irving<\/a> and edited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/clare-watson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clare Watson<\/a>.
