A week ago, very few people knew who Arthur Fery was. But he has been propelled into the limelight as the last man standing after a disastrous start to Wimbledon<\/a> for British players.<\/p>\n

Fery, who is ranked No 114 in the world, defied expectations on Monday night when he triumphed on Centre Court<\/a> over one of the top players for most of the past decade, the former world No 3 Grigor Dimitrov.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old told reporters after the match that he was feeling an \u201cunbelievable amount of emotion\u201d.<\/p>\n

Fery has become the first British wildcard \u2013 someone ranked too low to receive an automatic place \u2013 player to reach the singles quarter-final, and only the fourth British man to do so this century.<\/p>\n

For Fery\u2019s former coaches, his success is no surprise. Paul Goldstein, who coached him at Stanford University, told the Guardian that Fery\u2019s \u201cmagical run\u201d was \u201cso well earned, so well deserved<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdjectives that come to mind are: poised, composed. If you saw what he did yesterday \u2013 the first time ever on Centre Court, playing in front of tens of thousands, many millions more watching on TV, being the last British male player standing in this event going on several days and the responsibility that comes with that \u2013 we use superlatives like extraordinary and exceptional often, but it\u2019s so appropriate for what he did,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Goldstein, who was travelling to London on Tuesday night in the hope of securing a ticket to see Fery in his quarter-final match against Italy\u2019s Flavio Cobolli on Wednesday, was first contacted by him when he was a teenager at school looking for a way to continue his studies and his tennis at a high level.<\/p>\n

While he said that Arthur\u2019s calmness under pressure was a feature of his personality, he also credited the \u201clevel of intensity that comes with playing collegiate tennis\u201d, since it involves representing a team and the university. Fery\u2019s unique quality was that he was \u201cvery committed, innovative, an independent thinker\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Alison Taylor, who gave private and group lessons to Fery from age four until his teens, said although Fery was \u201camazingly athletic\u201d, with exceptional footwork and good hand-eye coordination from a young age, \u201che wasn\u2019t the best in his age group\u201d.<\/p>\n

What was striking, she said, was that \u201che\u2019s a real performer\u201d, who enjoyed playing in front of others and showing off his skills. \u201cHe thrived on that, showing people that he was a good player,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

He was a \u201cdream to coach because he could do everything well\u201d, in addition to being \u201cquite a mature boy\u201d, who was \u201calso very humble, a very kind boy\u201d.<\/p>\n

Taylor echoed Goldstein\u2019s observation that Fery was inclined to think outside the box. \u201cHe\u2019s always wanted to not just be a baseliner \u2013 he\u2019s a creative tennis player and has a lot of variety to his game.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cIt\u2019s all been a shock even to him how far he\u2019s come \u2013 but with his confidence he can cause these top players a lot of damage \u2026 He is fearless, you didn\u2019t see him crack under the pressure. The sky\u2019s the limit.\u201d<\/p>\n

This confidence has swiftly become his signature, according to several former tennis stars. \u201cThe hard part for any tennis player is between the ears. And he has that sort of swagger and belief. That gets you a long way in this sport,\u201d said Greg Rusedski, former British No 1 who has practised with Fery.<\/p>\n

Fery was born near Paris and moved to England aged two. He grew up in Wimbledon, 10 minutes away from the All England Club, and attended King\u2019s College School, a local private school.<\/p>\n

He has chosen to play for the UK despite his French heritage. His mother, Olivia, was a professional tennis player and his father, Lo\u00efc, was a businessman who in 2023 was ranked as France\u2019s 389th richest person.<\/p>\n

Fery first picked up a racket aged five, moving into the Lawn Tennis<\/a> Association system as a junior before taking time out to study science, technology and society at Stanford University in California, which he described as a \u201cgreat kind of backup plan if tennis didn\u2019t work out\u201d.<\/p>\n

In his second year Fery became the first No 1 ranked singles player in the country to attend the university since Bob Bryan, who went on to become a doubles Olympic champion.<\/p>\n

Bryan said that Fery was well respected and a \u201cquiet leader\u201d at Stanford, adding that he had been \u201cvery impressed\u201d to see him play at the university, comparing his build and style to Japanese tennis player Kei Nishikori.<\/p>\n

Jamie Murray, former Doubles no 1 and brother to British No 1 Andy Murray, said \u201ca lot of people within British tennis had a lot of belief in him and what he could do\u201d.<\/p>\n

Whether Fery\u2019s height poses a disadvantage to him has been a subject of much discussion. At 5\u20199\u201d, he is UK male average, but four to five inches shorter than the standard professional tennis player.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously he\u2019s a short king,\u201d said former women\u2019s No 1 Johanna Konta. \u201cSo he doesn\u2019t have the height advantage, but my goodness he makes up for it with how explosive he is. I think that backhand is incredible, and again his fighting spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n

At Wimbledon, Fery has enjoyed having \u201cthe crowd obviously completely behind me\u201d \u2013 with fans chanting nautical puns such as \u201call aboard the Fery\u201d.<\/p>\n

Carrying the weight of a nation\u2019s expectations on his shoulders, Fery, who will break into the world\u2019s top 100 for the first time after Wimbledon, is determined to keep a level head. \u201cWhat I experienced [on Monday] personally, I\u2019m really going to cherish it for the rest of my life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho knows, that might be the first and last time. Hopefully not. So yeah, I\u2019m just trying to really soak it all in and keep the memories.\u201d<\/p>\n
