{"id":751524,"date":"2026-07-09T00:38:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T00:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/751524\/"},"modified":"2026-07-09T00:38:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T00:38:10","slug":"us-launches-more-strikes-on-iran-with-local-media-reporting-explosions-along-south-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/751524\/","title":{"rendered":"US launches more strikes on Iran with local media reporting explosions along south coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.files.bbci.co.uk\/core\/website\/assets\/static\/news\/incident-types\/light-mode\/bbc-verify.71bca62fc4.svg\" alt=\"BBC Verify\" height=\"2.5rem\" width=\"11.6875rem\" draggable=\"false\" class=\"ssrcss-901ql1-ContributorImageComponent e2hr5uu0\"\/>Iran has been trying to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz &#8211; how have ships been getting through?published at 19:10 BST 8 July<\/p>\n<p>19:10 BST 8 July<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">By Thomas Copeland<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">As a reminder, Tuesday&#8217;s US strikes on Iran followed attacks by Iran on three tankers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/c17y1vnn2qxt?post=asset%3A3f265466-df77-489f-8165-6e63d230d5d8#post\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Iran has been trying to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz and has demanded that ships take a government-approved route.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Since a deal to end the war with the US was signed on 17 June, Iran has been blamed for five strikes on ships using other routes instead. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">This includes a route recommended by the US through Omani waters and also an International Maritime Organization lane through the middle of the strait.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The numbers of ships carrying cargo, oil or gas through these non-Iranian routes steadily grew to a peak of 38 on 24 June, according to data from maritime intelligence firm Kpler. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Then Iran attacked two ships and traffic through the non-Iranian routes slumped. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But these transits have continued at a lower level, despite Iran\u2019s threats, averaging about 13 a day between 30 June and 7 July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">We\u2019ll be keeping a close eye on the data to see what impact yesterday\u2019s three ship attacks will have. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bar chart titled \u201cNumber of ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz, 17 June to 7 July 2026.\u201d Two panels compare daily ship crossings on the Iranian route (blue bars) and the Omani\/IMO route (red bars).
