{"id":75169,"date":"2025-08-11T17:28:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T17:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/75169\/"},"modified":"2025-08-11T17:28:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T17:28:08","slug":"what-martina-navratilova-once-said-was-the-only-thing-thatd-prevent-coco-gauff-from-winning-double-figure-grand-slams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/75169\/","title":{"rendered":"What Martina Navratilova once said was the only thing that\u2019d prevent Coco Gauff from winning \u2018double figure\u2019 Grand Slams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Coco Gauff has advanced at the Cincinnati Open after winning her opening match against China\u2019s Wang Xinyu.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/coco-gauff\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gauff\u2019s<\/a> comfortable 6-3 6-2 victory contrasted what has been a recent period of difficulty for the American star on the WTA Tour.<\/p>\n<p>After all, Gauff was shocked in the Wimbledon first round by Dayan Yastremska, before being dumped out of the Canadian Open by <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/billie-jean-king-and-coco-gauff-both-send-messages-to-victoria-mboko-following-her-canadian-open-success\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eventual champion Victoria Mboko<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Two years ago, Gauff won the <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/cincinnati-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cincinnati Open<\/a> before capturing her first Grand Slam title at the <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/us-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Open<\/a>.   The American will be hoping for a repeat in 2025.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-1670626907-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Coco Gauff of the United States celebrates after defeating Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in their Women's Singles Final match on Day Thirteen of the 2023 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 09, 2023 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.\" \/>Photo by Elsa\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/martina-navratilova\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Martina Navratilova<\/a>, a nine-time Wimbledon Ladies Singles champion, predicted Gauff would win \u2018double-figure\u2019 majors after the American\u2019s US Open victory, pinpointing only one factor that could prevent the American from achieving this feat.<\/p>\n<p>Martina Navratilova said only injury could prevent Coco Gauff from winning \u2018double-figure\u2019 Grand Slams<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skysports.com\/amp\/tennis\/news\/12110\/13200008\/coco-gauff-us-open-defending-champion-hoping-to-rediscover-her-spark-with-flushing-meadows-return\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sky Sports<\/a> following Gauff\u2019s victory at the 2023 US Open, Navratilova said: \u201cShe [Gauff] will win double-figure majors if she stays fit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were talking the big three. Now it\u2019s the big four. It\u2019s Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has no pressure on her now because now she\u2019s won this one, so the expectations have been met. I think the confidence that she\u2019ll get from this, she\u2019s just getting started. Now she\u2019s got some time to get better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither player played their best tennis but Coco played the best tennis when she needed to get back into the match in the second set. In the third set she played smart. She didn\u2019t give Sabalenka anything to hit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust see how much it meant to her. You have to trust yourself that you can put it together. She\u2019s such a great role model for young kids growing up who want to play tennis or just achieve something because she had a dream. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow she\u2019s achieved it.
