Scientists at the SETI Institute forecasted the event which is how the photographer caught the spectacle.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">If an asteroid was ever threatening <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Earth<\/a>, the best way to stop it might be with a nuclear explosion, according to a new study published by Chinese scientists. But how exactly would this work?<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">That\u2019s the question the research team, consisting of members from China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology, and China Academy of Engineering Physics, has been trying to answer, focusing on asteroid targets of 328 feet or greater.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gettyimages-1257003992-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Asteroid flies near the earth orbit. Meteorite approaching Earth.\u00a0 Elements of this image furnished by NASA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\"> (Elen11\/Getty Images \/ Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">If an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/search?q=asteroid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">asteroid<\/a> of this size was ever on a direct path towards Earth, researchers theorize that one of two &#8220;defense modes&#8221; could be used to protect our <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">planet<\/a> from impact.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/asteroid-2024-yr4-no-longer-expected-moon-impact-2032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">DANGEROUS ASTEROID NO LONGER EXPECTED TO HIT THE MOON IN 2032<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Direct rendezvous impact blasting mode<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">This first mode would be used for any sized asteroid with short warning impact times.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In this mode, a large rocket with a nuclear device inside and a front end kinetic impacter would be launched and guided towards the targeted asteroid at full speed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gettyimages-1053307776-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Meteorites in a deep space, science fiction fantasy, Elements of this image furnished by NASA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\"> (Elen11\/Getty Images \/ Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Once the rocket hits the asteroid, the front-end kinetic impacter creates a crater on the asteroid due to the force of the impact. The nuclear device would then be detonated inside the crater, changing the course of the asteroid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The advantages of this mode include the ability to <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/from-liftoff-splashdown-see-most-pivotal-moments-artemis-ii-mission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">launch<\/a> instantly, and the relatively simple system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\">The fourth meteor in one week was spotted streaking across the night sky from Warren, Michigan, on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/everything-scientists-would-want-to-know-if-an-asteroid-was-heading-toward-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">EVERYTHING SCIENTISTS WOULD WANT TO KNOW IF AN ASTEROID WAS HEADING TOWARD EARTH<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">A downside of this mode would be the randomness on location and size of craters created on the asteroid due to the high speed impact and timeline. Another would be the possibility that the impact was not strong enough to create a deep enough crater.<\/p>\n<p>Companion flight deepening crater blasting mode<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">This option is meant for asteroid targets that are larger and have ample warning time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In this mode, a rocket is launched into orbit. The defense <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/artemis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">module<\/a> is then deployed from the rocket, which does a flyby orbit of the asteroid to gain observations determining the place the penetration device can hit the asteroid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gettyimages-1317722903-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Saving planet Earth from asteroid.
