French superstar Kylian Mbapp\u00e9 told reporters<\/a> that he suffered a “minor ankle injury” during Thursday’s 2-0 win over Morocco, though he added that he’s “completely fine.”<\/p>\n

Mbapp\u00e9 was subbed out of the match in the 77th minute after calling over to the bench, going to the ground while stretching out his leg.<\/p>\n

“[Jean-Philippe] Mateta was in a better position to play the remaining minutes of the match and was fitter at that moment,” Mbapp\u00e9 noted. “That’s all that happened.”<\/p>\n

Before the injury Mbapp\u00e9 scored for France, his eighth goal of the tournament and 20th World Cup goal of his career. Only Lionel Messi has matched his outlay from the 2026 tournament, and only Messi has more all-time World Cup goals (21). <\/p>\n

It was a moment of redemption for Mbapp\u00e9, who missed a first-half penalty. <\/p>\n

Mbapp\u00e9, 27, is building a case to be one of the greatest World Cup players of all time, if not the greatest. He already has won a title with France, reached the final four years ago (scoring a hat trick against Argentina) and has his country looking poised to win another title this summer. He could feasibly play two or three more World Cups beyond this iteration as well, accumulating an absurd amount of goals in the process. <\/p>\n

Any injury in the short term is obviously a huge concern. While France is loaded beyond belief\u2014players like Bradley Barcola, Mateta and Warren Za\u00efre-Emery came off the bench for them Thursday, while Aur\u00e9lien Tchouam\u00e9ni, Ibrahima Konat\u00e9, Rayan Cherki and Lucas Hern\u00e1ndez didn’t feature at all\u2014Mbapp\u00e9 has been the team’s key figure. His clinical finishing makes France an absolute nightmare to face. <\/p>\n

And it sounds as though he’ll be fine ahead of Tuesday’s semifinal matchup against either Spain or Belgium.
