The global-average temperature for January-June 2026 was the third-highest on record, NOAA said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/jun-2026-temps.png\" alt=\"A map showing that most of the globe was much above average temperature in July.\" class=\"wp-image-140081\"\/>Figure 1. Meanwhile, global land surface temperatures ranked as the fourth warmest on record for the month. North America, Europe (tied), and Africa each experienced their second-warmest June on record. Oceania experienced its third-warmest June on record and Asia recorded its fourth warmest. While South America also observed an above-average June temperature, it did not rank among the ten warmest Junes.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/monitoring\/monthly-report\/global\/202606\/global-annual-temperature-rankings-outlook\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NCEI\u2019s statistical analysis<\/a>, there is about a 95% chance that 2026 will rank among the four warmest years on record. This statistics-based product is not designed to explicitly take El Ni\u00f1o or La Ni\u00f1a events into account, so with a global-atmosphere-warming El Ni\u00f1o event about to unfold, the odds are likely considerably higher.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bluesky-embed\" data-bluesky-uri=\"at:\/\/did:plc:nipoqrw2c5olbwkhy3bqxkiy\/app.bsky.feed.post\/3mq6doe5w422o\" data-bluesky-cid=\"bafyreie4ydvcdl7bmzvdhfidhhylqhaj3owysb6i42zieyqd4utzjwntvm\">\n<p lang=\"en\">Wednesday El Ni\u00f1o update &#8211; Sea surface temperature anomalies have jumped a bit in the last few days in the important Ni\u00f1o region 3.4 (record high). The warm pool is also extending pretty far east already! Conditions look favorable for more strengthening in the near-term.Data from NOAA OISSTv2.1. \ud83c\udf0a<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:nipoqrw2c5olbwkhy3bqxkiy?ref_src=embed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zack Labe (@zacklabe.com)<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:nipoqrw2c5olbwkhy3bqxkiy\/post\/3mq6doe5w422o?ref_src=embed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2026-07-09T00:07:24.582Z<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.bsky.app\/static\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/p>\n<p>NOAA expects a very strong \u201csuper\u201d El Ni\u00f1o\u00a0event<\/p>\n<p>An El Ni\u00f1o advisory continues in the Eastern Pacific, NOAA reported in its July 9\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso_advisory\/ensodisc.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">monthly discussion<\/a>\u00a0of the state of the El Ni\u00f1o\/Southern Oscillation, or ENSO. NOAA predicts with the highest possible confidence that El Ni\u00f1o conditions will continue through February 2027 (100% chance). Weekly average sea surface temperatures in the benchmark Ni\u00f1o 3.4 region are currently at 1.2\u00b0C above average, above the 1.0\u00b0C threshold for a moderate El Ni\u00f1o event. The threshold for a strong event is 1.5\u00b0C above average, and 2.0\u00b0C for a very strong (colloquially dubbed a \u201csuper\u201d) event.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/iri.columbia.edu\/our-expertise\/climate\/forecasts\/enso\/current\/?enso_tab=enso-cpc_updatehttps:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso_advisory\/figure07.gif\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">official probabilities<\/a> from the NOAA Climate Prediction Center issued June 22, the August-September-October peak of hurricane season has a 100% chance of El Ni\u00f1o.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso_advisory\/strengths\/index.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NOAA is giving<\/a>\u00a0a 48% chance of very strong El Ni\u00f1o conditions being in place during peak hurricane season and an 81% chance for the October-December period. The Arctic experienced its warmest June on record at 2.22\u00b0C (4.00\u00b0F) above average, eclipsing the previous 2012 record by 0.26\u00b0C (0.47\u00b0F). Additionally, this was the first time the Arctic saw a June temperature departure of 2.0\u00b0C (3.6\u00b0F) or greater. Notably, the Arctic&#8217;s 10 warmest Junes have all occurred since 2012. So far in July, <a href=\"https:\/\/nsidc.org\/sea-ice-today\/sea-ice-tools\/charctic-interactive-sea-ice-graph\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arctic sea ice extent<\/a> has been running slightly lower than in 2012, which set the all-time record for lowest seasonal extent in September.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nsidc.org\/data\/seaice_index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Antarctic sea ice extent<\/a>\u00a0in June 2026 was the sixth-lowest on record. All but one of these records were set in Europe from June 22-30. No stations set an all-time cold record.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps more extraordinary than the record high temperatures set during Europe&#8217;s heat wave was the extreme humidity that accompanied it, which helped allow new all-time national records for highest minimum temperature to be set in every country in Europe except Italy and Greece, according to Herrera. The humid heat increased heat stress and led to a death toll in the thousands, according to multiple sources (see Tweet below). Herrera&#8217;s nomination for craziest record set in Europe was the 40.4\u00b0C (104.7\u00b0F) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ogimet.com\/cgi-bin\/gsynres?lang=en&amp;ind=33019&amp;decoded=yes&amp;ndays=2&amp;ano=2026&amp;mes=06&amp;day=29&amp;hora=18\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pinsk<\/a> on June 29, which set a new all-time heat record for Belarus. <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/extremetemps.bsky.social\/post\/3mphhm7z54c2l\" rel=\"nofollow
