Tennis fans gathered on Wimbledon\u2019s famous grass mound spent much of Thursday speculating how Henman Hill \u2013 more recently known as Murray Mound \u2013 might be renamed if the newest British star, Arthur Fery, continues his meteoric rise.<\/p>\n

As Fery-mania builds in SW19 and across the UK in advance of Fery\u2019s hotly anticipated semi-final match against the German No 2 seed, Alexander Zverev, on Friday, they have eschewed suggestions such as Fery Field to alight on one name: Arthur\u2019s Seat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s literally nothing that begins with \u2018f\u2019,\u201d lamented Natalie Humphreys, who had travelled from Glasgow to attend the championships. \u201cBut could we make it Arthur\u2019s Seat? It\u2019s such a good one!\u201d<\/p>\n

Humphreys was among thousands of tennis fans enjoying the added buzz around Wimbledon\u2019s grounds after Fery\u2019s unexpected victory on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re big Murray fans, because we\u2019re from Scotland, so it\u2019s actually amazing to see someone British coming through and winning again,\u201d said Humphreys. \u201cHe\u2019s 23 so he\u2019s a bit older than a lot of the new people coming up, and it\u2019s almost like he\u2019s got the maturity that younger players haven\u2019t \u2026 so he seems to just be sailing through. It\u2019s so exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Humphreys and her partner, Kai, had just returned from seeing Scotland play against Morocco in the World Cup in Boston. \u201cWe\u2019re having such a sporting summer, living our best lives,\u201d she said, adding that she was hoping it would continue with Fery facing off against Novak Djokovic in Sunday\u2019s final.<\/p>\n

Sarah Cadwallader, from Dorset, and her mother, Jane Collishaw, from Frome, Somerset, had secured ballot tickets for Thursday and considered whether to extend their visit to soak up the festive vibes on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did say to Mum: \u2018Should we give up our hotel and camp out tonight so that we can sit here and watch it?\u2019, but I think you\u2019d need a tent tonight,\u201d said Cadwallader.<\/p>\n

Cadwallader had phoned her mother on Wednesday to tell her how gripped she was by the match that propelled Fery through to the quarter-final. \u201c[She said] \u2018I haven\u2019t moved for three and a half hours\u2019, and then I said I hadn\u2019t either, and at the end it had been nearly five hours. I looked at my watch and I hadn\u2019t got up. It\u2019s been amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

She first saw Fery at the Queen\u2019s Club tennis tournament in June \u2013 \u201cI\u2019d never heard of him before, to be honest\u201d \u2013 and was thrilled to see him reappear at Wimbledon.<\/p>\n

At the quarter-final on Wednesday, Fery was buoyed up by the support of a rapturous home crowd, who roared in celebration as he won set after set and cheered him on with chants of \u201cLet\u2019s go Arthur, let\u2019s go\u201d and \u201cHere comes the Fery\u201d.<\/p>\n

Collishaw envisaged a repeat of the vibrant atmosphere on Friday. \u201cThe way he\u2019s playing and the confidence he\u2019s got, I don\u2019t see why he couldn\u2019t do it. He\u2019s going to have the crowd behind him as well, so I think that\u2019s going to make all the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joseph Ellis, from Barnes, south-west London<\/a>, was delighted to see a British player make it so far. \u201cEspecially as a wild card. You wouldn\u2019t have ever expected it, but it\u2019s very cool,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also backed Fery to make it to the final. \u201cIt\u2019ll be harder than his other games, obviously, but I reckon he\u2019s playing well. He can carry that momentum forward, or he can give us a good game at least.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leon Smith, the head of men\u2019s tennis at the Lawn Tennis<\/a> Association, said Fery\u2019s progress was \u201coutstanding\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said although Fery had had some recent successes in the Queen\u2019s Club championship and the Australian Open, \u201cnobody was going to predict a semi-final run, and maybe more\u201d.<\/p>\n

The crowd support would pose an advantage, and one that Fery was good at mobilising, Smith said. \u201cThere\u2019s going to be times he\u2019s feeling it physically. It\u2019s amazing what adrenaline can do when you hear the noise of Centre Court \u2013 you go again, find a third wind.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that Fery\u2019s background in US collegiate tennis was something the LTA was increasingly encouraging young British talent to pursue, to the extent that it was now the background of most players. The slower route has become more of an option for young players, since careers tend to be longer.<\/p>\n

Simon Hayes, the chief executive of Sport England, said he hoped Fery\u2019s Wimbledon run would have the same impact on tennis participation as the success of England\u2019s women\u2019s football team had on \u201cinspir[ing] a generation of girls to play football\u201d. However, he said it was important that moments like \u201cFery-mania\u201d were used to expand \u201copportunity and affordable access\u201d across the country.<\/p>\n

Jason Goodall, an ESPN tennis commenter and former professional player, said Fery\u2019s Wimbledon success was \u201cone of the truly great sports stories\u201d, capable of inspiring future generations to pick up a racket, while its David and Goliath narrative \u201ctranscends tennis\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, he said the forthcoming match against Zverev on Friday \u201ccouldn\u2019t be a stiffer test\u201d. \u201cHe\u2019s very much the underdog going into that match,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Goodall has discussed Fery with Tim Henman, whom he formerly coached. \u201cTim\u2019s just as impressed as I am in how he\u2019s played,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Yet he thinks talk of renaming Henman Hill Arthur\u2019s Seat might be somewhat premature. \u201cIt\u2019s a big leap to be a Tim Henman,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of work and a lot of time that will go in between now and achieving all that Tim did. But it\u2019s a possibility.
