We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of competitors are taking to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/crime\/clavicular-looksmaxxing-alligator-shooting-florida-b2978012.html\">Florida\u2019s Everglades<\/a> this weekend for the state\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/florida-python-invasive-species-capture-b2615138.html\">annual Burmese python challenge<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The 10-day competition aims to help capture and humanely kill the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/invasive-species-warning-golden-mussels-b2986494.html\">invasive species<\/a>, which the state says threaten local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/glasgow-scottish-b3012578.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wildlife<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>People who remove the most Burmese pythons \u2013 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/myfwc.com\/wildlifehabitats\/profiles\/reptiles\/snakes\/burmese-python\/\">one of the largest snakes in the world<\/a> \u2013 get a hefty sum of $10,000, and there are other grand prizes. The challenge runs through next weekend, when it will be time to see who has the most. <\/p>\n<p>Last year, winner Taylor Stanberry, the first woman to catch the most in the competition\u2019s 13-year history, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/flpythonchallenge.org\/participate\/competition\/winners\/\">caught 60 snakes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/GettyImages-1321516865.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"It\u2019s once again time for Florida\u2019s Burmese python removal challenge. Nearly a thousand participants from 30 states and Canada removed a record 294 Burmese pythons in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>What are the rules?<\/p>\n<p>People must register for the event, pay a fee of $25, complete online training and pass a quiz to be able to compete. But other tools or weapons are not (AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>When looking for the pythons, participants can use flashlights and headlamps, but the use of a gun is not allowed and competitors can be disqualified for killing a native snake or removing or damaging its eggs.<\/p>\n<p>Using dogs, drones, traps, bait, chemicals, explosives, smoke and motorized tools to catch the snakes is also prohibited.<\/p>\n<p>Any participant who does not humanely kill a python will be disqualified and novice participants must kill them immediately at the capture site.<\/p>\n<p>After they are killed, the carcasses must be chilled or frozen before they are turned in to a check station within a period of 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Registration remains open through the final day of the challenge.
