Josh Green on Thursday signed legislation formally recognizing the Hawai\u02bbi Conservation Sanctuary, a nonprofit inspired by a conservation sanctuary in New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/session\/measure_indiv.aspx?billtype=SB&amp;billnumber=3253&amp;year=2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/session\/measure_indiv.aspx?billtype=SB&amp;billnumber=3253&amp;year=2026\">Senate Bill 3253,<\/a> Act 226, Session Laws of Hawai\u02bbi 2026, the state-recognized sanctuary will serve as a hub for endangered species protection, research, education and habitat restoration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Green said \u201cevidence-based sanctuary models,\u201d similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitzealandia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.visitzealandia.com\/\">New Zealand\u2019s Zealandia (Te M\u0101ra a T\u0101ne),<\/a> can help protect Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Built as a fully fenced, predator-excluded sanctuary, Zealandia creates a safe haven where native birds, reptiles, and plants thrive and recover in near-natural habitats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cHawai\u2018i has more endangered species than the rest of the country put together \u2014 and establishing a network of sanctuaries safe from predators will ensure Hawai\u2018i can save our endangered birds and other species for future generations,\u201d said state Sen. Chris Lee, chair of the Senate Water, Land, Culture and the Arts Committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The measure also authorizes the sanctuary to operate on preserved land, engage in revenue-generating agricultural tourism, and collaborate with state agencies to support long-term conservation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 Hawaii News Now.
