Halle Berry<\/a> was married to David Justice from 1993 to 1997. And now, nearly three decades later, the former MLB player has given his take on their split \u2014 and it hasn\u2019t gone down well.<\/p>\n

Appearing on Matt Barnes\u2019s All the Smoke<\/a> podcast last week, David looked back on the early days of his and Halle\u2019s relationship and confessed he didn\u2019t \u201cknow if [his] heart was really into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe asked me to marry her after knowing me for five months,\u201d he said, recalling that they met in May 1992. \u201cI said OK, because I couldn’t say no. Who’s going to say no at that time? … I didn’t want to make her feel bad and say no, you know, or [if] I was just in the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

David \u2014 who had only been in one relationship prior to his marriage to Halle \u2014 recalled that he had certain expectations for what his wife should be like. \u201cMy knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn’t vast,\u201d he confessed. \u201cI’m a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

After they tied the knot, David said he began having concerns about whether Halle was someone he wanted to have children with. \u201cI\u2019m thinking, \u2018OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?\u2019\u201d he questioned. \u201cAt that time, as a young guy \u2014 she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like, motherly, and then we start having issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

Off the back of her breakthrough roles in Jungle Fever (1991) and Boomerang (1992), Halle was busy with her acting career in the mid-\u201990s. David said they \u201cspent a lot of time apart,\u201d but probably could\u2019ve made the relationship work if they \u201cknew about therapy.\u201d Despite this, he said he \u201cdecided to leave her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFebruary 1996, I told her, \u2018I can\u2019t do this no more,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In case you weren\u2019t aware, Halle and David\u2019s split wound up getting pretty messy. In the fall of 1996, Halle filed a restraining order<\/a> against her ex, claiming that she felt \u201cfear for [her] personal safety and well-being\u201d following an alleged verbal altercation outside her home. David has denied this, saying Halle was \u201cthrowing a tantrum.\u201d<\/p>\n

Halle has previously opened up about being badly\u00a0physically abused<\/a> by one of her famous exes. She has never named the individual, but on more than one occasion, David has denied speculation<\/a> that it was him.<\/p>\n

Now, as he continues to talk about their marriage, David\u2019s comments about Halle not cooking, cleaning, or being \u201cmotherly\u201d have sparked a lot of backlash online<\/a>. Among the comments, many are expressing disbelief that you\u2019d marry a famous actor and expect her to be taking on the brunt of household responsibilities. (According to Halle\u2019s IMDb page<\/a>, she worked on over 10 projects from 1992 to 1997.)<\/p>\n

\u201cLol, he really thought she was gonna stop her acting career and become a housewife,\u201d wrote one user in response<\/a> to the clip on X, while someone else suggested \u201che wanted her to dim her light for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHalle Berry, a household name, was supposed to take time away from her breadwinning career to \u2018cook and clean\u2019 for a man I\u2019ve never heard of?! LMAOOOO!\u201d read another post<\/a> with over 140,000 likes. \u201cAccording to their net worths, he needed to be the one throwing the apron on and cleaning the house too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf she\u2019s a famous actor and he\u2019s a professional baseball player why do you need her to cook and clean if you can afford a chef with maids ????\u201d questioned another user<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s Halle fuckin Berry bro.. you think God sent here down here to swiffer shit?? Lol,\u201d someone else remarked<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Plenty of others also criticized his sentiment in general, saying<\/a>: \u201cSo many Straight men don\u2019t want political, emotional and spiritual life partners, they just want domestic servants. Hire a house keeper.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, he thought that he had caught a beautiful rare bird to clip its wings and keep it caged? How emotionally unsound,\u201d added someone else<\/a>, referring to a popular quote from Trevor Noah<\/a> about men who are attracted to \u201cindependent women\u201d but actually want to make them \u201csubservient.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, Halle is in a happy relationship with singer-songwriter Van Hunt, and she shares two children<\/a>, daughter Nahla and son Maceo-Robert, with former partners. Meanwhile, David has been married to Rebecca Villalobos since 2001.<\/p>\n
