Most Australians have no religion, census could show if question was changed | Religion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Australia would no longer be a majority religious country if the format of a question in the census was changed, according to a new survey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The Essential Media poll tested the existing census format, where people choose from a list that includes the most common religions, \u201cno religion\u201d and \u201cother\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">At the 2021 census, about 39% of people selected \u201cno religion\u201d from that list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">In the new survey, released ahead of the 2026 Australian census on 11 August, 43% of people selected \u201cno religion\u201d when asked in the same format.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But when given a \u201cyes\/no\u201d option first (\u201cdo you have a religion?\u201d), followed by a text box to fill in if \u201cyes\u201d was selected, 54% of respondents picked \u201cno\u201d. That translates to about 2 million more adults without religion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The poll was commissioned by the Census \u2013 Not Religious? Mark No Religion campaign, which says the format being used by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/australian-bureau-of-statistics\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Bureau of Statistics<\/a> (ABS) is overstating the religiousness of Australia, and understating the numbers of those without any religion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Spokesperson Michael Dove, a self-confessed \u201cdemography nerd\u201d, said the census was the \u201cgold standard\u201d of data needed to \u201cinform debate, policy and ultimately funding decisions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWe trust the ABS to deliver us high-quality data that we can rely on and be confident that the right decisions are being made on the basis of the right data,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-rh233e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The campaign website lists <a href=\"https:\/\/censusnotreligious.org.au\/census-data-accuracy\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a range of surveys<\/a> that have found the no religion cohort to be higher than the census\u2019s 39%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The religion question has long been a source of contention, and in some cases humour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">In 2001, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2002\/aug\/27\/news\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than 70,000<\/a> Australians declared themselves Jedi Knights, inspired to Jediism by the Star Wars franchise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/feb\/28\/colander-wearing-pastafarian-strains-the-rules-with-queensland-drivers-licence-photo\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pastafarians<\/a>, members of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster who use colanders as religious headwear, say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-06-28\/church-of-the-flying-spaghetti-monster-attracts-more-pastafarian\/101189332\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">they have checked the \u201cno religion\u201d box<\/a> to avoid being counted as Christians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">There has been a steady decline in Christianity over the past 50 years, according to the ABS, but it was still the most common religion at the last census. Of those surveyed, 43.9% listed Christianity as their religion, while 38.9% ticked \u201cno religion\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The number of people from faiths other than Christianity and of no religion has been consistently rising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The poll surveyed more than 2,000 people using the existing census question, and another group of more than 2,000 people with the proposed alternative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">In the first group, 43% selected \u201cno religion\u201d, 55% selected a religion and 2% chose not to answer. With the second option, that number flipped: 43% said they did have a religion and more than half (54%) said they did not (4% chose not to answer).<\/p>\n<p><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-18\" class=\"dcr-76akua\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a>Free newsletter | When needed<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-vf9hps\">Sign up to Breaking News Australia<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1r7my33\">Get the most important news as it breaks<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1782483732_529_2998.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"dcr-xiq31o\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"EmailSignup-skip-link-18\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-label=\"after newsletter promotion\" role=\"note\" class=\"dcr-76akua\">after newsletter promotion<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Religious affiliation was lower among those aged 18-34 (34%), and higher among those with a university education (50%) in the second group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The poll surveyed adults, while the census includes children \u2013 an adult fills it out for younger children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">After the 2021 census, the ABS considered changing the question, and said it had received feedback that the way the question is worded \u201cassumes you have a religion\u201d, but that any changes might mean \u201cthe data would not be comparable with data from previous censuses\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Dove said the campaign members were involved in two rounds of consultation with the ABS after the 2021 census and that the bureau was responsive.
