UPDATE: On Sunday night, the city of Maple Plain said that the drinking water advisory had been lifted.

Maple Plain residents are under a boil water advisory on Saturday after the city said a loss of pressure may have contaminated the drinking water.

According to a notice from Maple Plain, residents should not drink tap water without boiling it or use a safe alternative, such as bottled water.

The city said the pressure loss happened due to a communication failure between the water tower and the water treatment plant. The notice said the affected area includes all of Maple Plain residents and homes east of Maple Plain connected to the city water system.

The notice said people should bring water to a full, rolling boil for at least one minute and let it cool before using it.

Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth and food preparation until further notice. The city said boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in water.

What should residents know?

Officials said inadequately treated water may contain bacteria, viruses and parasites. The advisory said those organisms can cause symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea.

“If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, it is recommended you seek medical advice,” the city wrote on the advisory.

The city is encouraging residents to share the boil water advisory with others.

For more information on drinking water advisory guidelines, click here.
