Marco Palestra has completed his transfer to Chelsea from Atalanta (chelseafc.com)<\/p>\n

Inter President Beppe Marotta notes that new Chelsea signing Marco Palestra \u2018backed out of a verbal agreement\u2019 with the Nerazzurri, but blames the defender\u2019s agent as well: \u2018He could have steered him in a different direction.\u2019<\/p>\n

Inter President Marotta joined coach Cristian Chivu<\/a> for a press conference on Monday, on the first day of the Nerazzurri pre-season.<\/p>\n

The defending Serie A champions are still looking for a replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who joined Real Madrid in a \u20ac20m deal.<\/p>\n

Marotta: Palestra \u2018backed out of a verbal agreement\u2019 with Inter<\/p>\n

Their primary target, Marco Palestra, joined Chelsea two weeks ago despite having reached an agreement with Inter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to keep costs under control, not investments. I\u2019m referring to players we can\u2019t sign because their wages are too high and to agents, whose influence on the club\u2019s finances is becoming increasingly significant,\u201d Marotta said via FcInternews.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to deal with these realities, which have a major impact on the transfer market.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake the case of Palestra, for example. It was the result of a decision made by the player, who backed out of a verbal agreement,\u201d Marotta added.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis agent could have steered him in a different direction, but chose this path instead, and we had to accept seeing another Italian player move to a league that is not in direct competition with ours.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his press conference, Marotta announced that Inter\u2019s second target, Anan Khalaili, had failed his medical tests, meaning that his \u20ac25m transfer from Union Saint-Gilloise has fallen apart.<\/a><\/p>\n

Inter have won three Serie A titles during Marotta\u2019s reign, but the one conquered in 2025-26 under Chivu was his first one as the Nerazzurri\u2019s president.<\/p>\n

Inter began their pre-season today and will make their 2026-27 Serie A debut at home against Monza on August 22.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
