{"id":760971,"date":"2026-07-13T19:57:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T19:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/760971\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T19:57:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T19:57:09","slug":"i-could-just-strangle-you-right-now-erik-cantu-accused-of-threatening-woman-police-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/760971\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;I could just strangle you right now&#8217;: Erik Cantu accused of threatening woman, police say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">SAN ANTONIO \u2013 San Antonio police said it is investigating a terroristic threat allegation made against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/topic\/Erik_Cantu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/topic\/Erik_Cantu\/\">Erik Cantu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">According to an SAPD incident report obtained by KSAT, a police officer was dispatched on a July 1 \u201cthreats\u201d call to The Park at Sutton Oaks Apartments in the 1000 block of Locke Street. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Upon arrival, the officer spoke to a 20-year-old woman, who said she had been in a dating relationship with Cantu, 21, for a \u201ccouple of months,\u201d the report states. She called police because he allegedly made \u201ccomments that were concerning\u201d to her. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Wherever the f&#8212; I wanna go\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The woman said Cantu arrived at the complex approximately one hour before she called police. The two were set to pick up food from a nearby Wendy\u2019s, according to the report. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">On their way to the restaurant, police said Cantu and the woman entered into a \u201cverbal altercation\u201d after he admitted that \u201che was sleeping with other women when he met her.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">When she received her food, authorities said the woman threw the bag of food at Cantu \u201cout of anger.\u201d According to the woman, Cantu then told her, \u201cI could just strangle you right now, but I\u2019m tryna (trying to) be a changed man.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">When Cantu, who was driving, got onto a highway, the woman told SAPD she asked him where he was taking her. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWherever the f&#8212; I wanna go,\u201d Cantu told the woman, according to the report. <\/p>\n<p>Talk of weapons<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">During her interview with police, the woman told the officer that Cantu \u201cpulled out a pocketknife and opened it\u201d in front of her. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">While she said Cantu didn\u2019t \u201cdisplay the knife in a threatening manner,\u201d the woman admitted to the officer that the presence of the knife \u201ccaused her concern,\u201d SAPD said. She also alleged Cantu may have mentioned \u201csomething\u201d about a firearm during the car ride, but she said she \u201cnever\u201d saw one. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The 20-year-old woman told Cantu she wanted to \u201cget out of the vehicle.\u201d In response, police said Cantu suggested the woman jump out of the vehicle \u201cwhile it was moving\u201d or he would \u201cpush her out\u201d himself. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">After an unspecified amount of time, Cantu pulled into a gas station. At the gas station, according to the report, Cantu told the woman to get out of the vehicle before \u201cI kick your a&#8211;.\u201d Cantu left the woman at the location. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The woman, who feared Cantu would return to the gas station, told the officer that she called an Uber to take her home. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">At this time, Cantu has not been arrested or charged in connection with this case. <\/p>\n<p>Cantu\u2019s recent probation sentencing<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Cantu was sentenced June 8 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2026\/06\/08\/erik-cantu-wont-serve-additional-prison-time-receives-2-year-deferred-adjudication-sentence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2026\/06\/08\/erik-cantu-wont-serve-additional-prison-time-receives-2-year-deferred-adjudication-sentence\/\">two years of deferred adjudication<\/a> on a 2025 burglary of a habitation charge when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/12\/07\/erik-cantu-re-arrested-accused-of-burglarizing-womans-apartment-affidavit-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/12\/07\/erik-cantu-re-arrested-accused-of-burglarizing-womans-apartment-affidavit-says\/\">he was accused of breaking into the home of his child\u2019s mother<\/a>. Cantu was indicted on the charge one week before he was sentenced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">At the time, the June 8 sentencing meant he would not serve any additional time behind bars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">While SAPD said its investigation into the case is ongoing, one of Cantu\u2019s probation orders handed down at his June 8 sentencing was that he was not allowed to drive for two years.<\/p>\n<p>The allegation\u2019s connection to James Brennand<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/topic\/James_Brennand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/topic\/James_Brennand\/\">James Brennand<\/a>, the ex-SAPD officer accused of shooting Cantu in 2022, returned to a Bexar County courtroom Monday morning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Bexar County prosecutor Neil Cordero asked Judge Joel Perez in Bexar County\u2019s 437th Criminal District Court to delay Brennand\u2019s trial, which was previously set for July 20, due to the new investigation into Cantu. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">According to Cordero, the terroristic threat accusation is \u201cstill in the investigation phase\u201d and the charge has not been filed with the Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The charge is considered a Class A misdemeanor. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWe believe the Court should continue (delay) this case because, at this time, the State of Texas would be greatly disadvantaged in proceeding to trial with this investigation pending over our named complainant,\u201d Cordero told Perez.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Perez denied the state\u2019s request. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Approximately 75 minutes after Monday\u2019s hearing ended, Bexar County court records showed that the aggravated assault by a public servant charge against Brennand was dismissed due to \u201cfurther investigation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">After the dismissal, KSAT reached out to the Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s Office for comment on Monday\u2019s development. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThe purpose of the motion was to allow us time to properly investigate and assess the implications of this new development and its potential impact on the current case against James Brennand,\u201d a Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s Office spokesperson told KSAT in a statement. \u201cAs a result of the judge\u2019s ruling in denying the motion, we decided to dismiss the case due to the pending investigation of Mr. Cantu\u2019s latest allegations.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">While the DA\u2019s office declined additional details on Brennand\u2019s dismissal, the spokesperson said the case can be refiled at a later date after the \u201ccompletion\u201d of the Cantu \u201cinvestigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">More recent coverage of this story on KSAT: <\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 by KSAT &#8211;
