Appearing on NBA Today on Monday (Twitter video link<\/a>), ESPN\u2019s Shams Charania said free agent forward LeBron James<\/a> is inching closer to choosing his next team. Charania reiterated that the Cavaliers, Heat, Warriors, Sixers and Timberwolves have been LeBron\u2019s \u201cleading suitors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s decision time for LeBron James, because all of the information, for the most part, is in,\u201d Charania said. \u201cGMs, presidents, owners, they\u2019ve all been heard from and they\u2019re continuing to have conversations with agent Rich Paul. \u2026 Players have also reached out to LeBron James to recruit him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charania also said James\u2019 choice won\u2019t be \u201cfinancially driven,\u201d as previously reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeBron James has made it clear privately that he wants to go somewhere where he can compete for a championship,\u201d Charania said. \u201cSomewhere where he feels like he finds that happiness from a team environment and culture that he feels he can uplift.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chris Haynes of NBA on Prime (Twitter video link<\/a>) essentially confirmed Charania\u2019s report, though he added the Nuggets to the list of teams still in the mix for the league\u2019s all-time leading scorer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve talked to LeBron James\u2019 agent Rich Paul and he said [LeBron] has all the information needed. So now it\u2019s all up to LeBron James to make a decision,\u201d Haynes reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rival teams reportedly view Cleveland, the team that selected James first overall in 2003, as the frontrunner to sign the Akron native.<\/p>\n

ESPN\u2019s Anthony Slater, who\u2019s very plugged-in with the Warriors, said on SportsCenter that Golden State\u2019s brass has been fairly pessimistic about its chances of signing James (Twitter video link<\/a>). Still, he noted that Draymond Green<\/a> and Stephen Curry<\/a> have been attempting to lure the 22-time All-Star to the Bay Area. \u201cNot many people in this process can reach LeBron James directly, but the Warriors players can,\u201d said Slater.
\nSlater added that the Warriors\u2019 decision to hire<\/a> Frank Vogel as their top assistant coach had little \u2014 if anything \u2014 to do with the four-time Finals MVP. James and Vogel won a championship together with the Lakers in 2020. \u201cThey wanted somebody next to Steve Kerr on the bench who has head coaching experience \u2014 obviously Vogel has that,\u201d Slater said. \u201cAnd also they needed somebody to lead the defense. Vogel, historically, has been a great defensive coach. \u2026 And maybe that helps a little bit in the LeBron pitch, but generally they just want Frank Vogel next to Steve Kerr.\u201d
\nAccording to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints<\/a>, Green\u2019s pitch to LeBron may have given the Warriors a better shot at landing the 41-year-old, but executives at Summer League still widely consider the Cavs to be in the pole position.
