And in that context, it\u2019s worth noting that there is a very strong sense that while you can, on both sides, mitigate the control that the other side, the Chinese or the American side, has over your trade relationship, it\u2019s not possible to avoid it completely. On the Chinese side, even though, of course, there\u2019s a great deal of talk about self-sufficiency, as I\u2019ve mentioned before, the bare fact is that the major consumer markets of the world which China sells into are still in the Global North. They are the United States. They are Western Europe, the European Union, and other rich countries. China is doing better in emergent economies in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and elsewhere. But even now, those don\u2019t add up to a replacement for the rich consumer economies of the West. And even though China has cut out of some of the high technology elements of those, it will not want to lose those markets completely. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It\u2019s not possible, in a very short period, simply to move the whole of that production.
