Beaumont residents who have been using the city’s old blue recycling containers as extra trash cans will need to make new plans starting Sept. 1, when the city ends the courtesy service that has allowed those cans to be collected with regular garbage.

Beaumont’s citywide recycling program ended in 2019, but many residents kept the blue cans and continued using them as a second garbage container. The city’s announcement that the blue cans will no longer be serviced prompted questions online about what to do with the containers.

Fernando Cedillo, Beaumont’s operations manager for solid waste, said residents do not have to throw the blue cans away. Instead, the city will pick them up and repurpose them for municipal use rather than sending them to a landfill.

“They can call us here at the Solid Waste Department and schedule a pickup, but they can dial 3-1-1, ask to speak to Solid Wast, and schedule the pickup,” Cedillo said.

Residents who still want a second garbage can can get one, but it must be a green, city-issued container and comes with an additional monthly service fee of $5.

“The blue cans will no longer be serviced because they were used as a courtesy. It’s not fair for the citizens that are paying for it to give those who are not paying for it. So we just want to be clear and transparent across the board,” Cedillo said.

Cedillo said accountability is the main reason for the change. Because the blue cans are privately owned and no longer part of the city’s garbage collection system, the city does not have a reliable way to track how many are still being serviced. Switching entirely to green cans, he said, ensures every household receiving extra collection is paying for it.

Residents can begin scheduling blue-can pickups now by calling 311. City officials said work orders are typically completed within about seven days.

Beaumont residents who have been using the city’s old blue recycling containers as extra trash cans will need…

[47
192,79
post-762660","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science
["GET
