That was even though oil prices continue to jump on worries that the United States and Iran <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-hormuz-strait-war-july-14-2026-abd060c55feea216625689e57d8f76be\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">may return to all-out war<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 added 0.4% to recover some of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stocks-markets-iran-trump-ai-2d6744b09c68b5473d0bc8584b89e60e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its 0.8% loss from the prior day<\/a>. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 56 points, or 0.1%, as of 1:51 p.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 1.1% higher.<\/p>\n<p>Stocks got help from easing yields in the bond market, which fell after a report said U.S. consumers had to pay prices for gasoline, food and other costs of living that were 3.5% higher last month than a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"ap-audio-us-stocks-hold-steadier-after-inflation-data-even-as-ibm-plunges\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n                    AP AUDIO: US stocks hold steadier after inflation data, even as IBM plunges\n                <\/p>\n<p class=\"AudioEnhancement-description\">Stocks are relatively calm in the early going on Wall Street.<\/p>\n<p>While that\u2019s more than nearly everyone would like, it wasn\u2019t as bad as May\u2019s 4.2% inflation rate or the 3.9% that economists expected for June. Less bad inflation could take pressure off <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/warsh-federal-reserve-inflation-4a1da547d64ae3d54fba29161b213601\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Federal Reserve<\/a>, which is <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/federal-reserve-kevin-warsh-interest-rates-103325df845d2d6bde63dfa4b8093d35\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">considering raising interest rates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Higher rates can keep a lid on inflation, but they also <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bond-market-warning-wall-street-trump-9ef90df1ae1cd1283f8cf04221611112\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slow the economy and hurt prices <\/a> for all kinds of investments.<\/p>\n<p>Following the inflation report, traders see less than a 13% chance that the Fed will raise its main interest rate at its next meeting later this month. That\u2019s down from the nearly 42% probability they saw the day before, according to data from CME Group.<\/p>\n<p>Rebounds for big, influential tech stocks also helped steady the market. They\u2019ve been <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stocks-markets-oil-ai-iran-e0194864aba4379a069ce31becae2558\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">swinging sharply<\/a> in recent weeks on worries that they shot too high in the euphoria around <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/artificial-intelligence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial-intelligence<\/a> technology and that the voracious demand for AI chips and data centers may fade if they don\u2019t produce the promised profits and productivity.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"more-section-display-name\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"Banks rake in big profits as both Wall Street and the US consumer stay strong\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jpmorgan-bank-earnings-economy-trading-markets-d56b36051dbaef8be234d86b49f8f620\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"In this Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, file photo, the JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. logo is displayed at their headquarters in New York. A day before, they were two of the heaviest weights on the S&amp;P 500 after falling 4.4% and 3.5%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, big risks remain for inflation. Fighting in the Middle East is threatening to close or slow traffic in the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/the-worlds-most-important-21-miles-0000019d2fbfd29daffdefffc72e0000\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, the narrow waterway that oil tankers use to exit the Persian Gulf and deliver crude to customers worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The price for a barrel of Brent crude, the international standard, briefly topped $87 in the morning. Following its leap of nearly 10% on Monday, that brought it back to where it was before the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-israel-war-oil-deal-june-17-2026-19652f4611b704c0a991bf1f5bc9a4b9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United States and Iran signed their interim deal<\/a> to halt their fighting in the middle of last month.<\/p>\n<p>Brent\u2019s price later pared its gain and was sitting at $84.48, up 1.4% from Monday\u2019s settlement. The pressure is on companies to deliver big growth to justify how high their stock prices have jumped. Indexes are near records despite the recent swings caused by worries about AI stocks.<\/p>\n<p>Bank of America, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo all on Tuesday reported <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jpmorgan-bank-earnings-economy-trading-markets-d56b36051dbaef8be234d86b49f8f620\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fatter profits for the latest quarter<\/a> than analysts expected. Their reports showed strength for their trading desks and suggested spending by U.S. consumers remains resilient.<\/p>\n<p>Their stocks mostly rose following the results. Goldman Sachs jumped 7.7%, but Citigroup fell 5.6%. <\/p>\n<p>IBM was the single heaviest weight on the S&amp;P 500 and the biggest reason the Dow lagged behind other indexes after dropping 24.5%. It\u2019s potentially heading for its worst day since at least 1972, according to data provider FactSet. <\/p>\n<p>CEO Arvind Krishna said <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ibm-q2-2f28030dd13c572ad21a512da77d96cd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">performance for IBM\u2019s software and infrastructure businesses fell short of expectations<\/a> last quarter after customers shifted their spending toward servers, storage and memory to get ahead of expected price increases caused by the AI boom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese conditions require our teams to execute perfectly, and this quarter we faltered,\u201d Krishna wrote in a letter to investors. \u201cWe did not adapt and move quickly enough, and numerous large deals failed to close on the timelines we expected, driving the majority of our shortfall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury dropped to 4.58% from 4.62% late Monday. It\u2019s a notable move, and it halts a run higher from 3.97% before the war with Iran began.<\/p>\n<p>Fed Chair Kevin Warsh testified before lawmakers on Capitol Hill for the first time since taking over leadership of the central bank. He pledged to make high inflation \u201ca thing of the past\u201d but offered no signal about the Fed\u2019s next steps. <\/p>\n<p>In stock markets abroad, indexes edged higher in Europe following a stronger finish in Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s Nikkei 225 added 0.7% after SoftBank Group Corp. rose 3.3%.
