\n\tThe Blue Beetle<\/a> is back!<\/p>\n

\n\tXolo Maridue\u00f1a is set to reprise his Blue Beetle role in the \u201cSuperman\u201d sequel \u201cMan of Tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film, currently in production, will be directed by James Gunn. Maridue\u00f1a first portrayed the character in the 2023 film \u201cBlue Beetle,\u201d directed by Angel Manuel Soto. Maridue\u00f1a played Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate who gains superpowers when an alien scarab latches on to him.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking on Michael Rosenbaum\u2019s podcast<\/a>, Gunn officially confirmed that Maridue\u00f1a\u2019s Jaime Reyes is the first character in the rebooted DCU. \u201cThe first DCU character, for sure,\u00a0Blue Beetle, and the first full DCU movie is \u2018Superman,’\u201d he said when \u201cBlue Beetle\u201d released. It\u2019s a historic role, as Blue Beetle was the first Latino superhero to lead a standalone film in the DC universe.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe only thing that is on my mind right now is just the fact that he\u2019s Latino. I have so much pride in getting to be a part of this project with Angel, someone like him,\u201d Maridue\u00f1a said at the time. \u201cI think it\u2019s so important, and I don\u2019t want to stand on the soapbox for too long but representation is so important.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for his physical preparation, Maridue\u00f1a bulked<\/a> up to about 130 pounds, then added 25 to 30 pounds of muscle by lifting weights and doing martial arts. \u201cA lot of it was just eating the right amount,\u201d he said. Back in 2023, Gunn and Peter Safran had committed to Maridue\u00f1a as Blue Beetle for the foreseeable future, and confirmed that he <\/a>was set to appear in upcoming films.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat I was most impressed by is his ability with both the comedic and the emotional material,\u201d Safran told\u00a0Variety. \u201cHe has all the skills.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSafran explained that the role called for a deftness in \u201cunbelievably funny physical comedy\u201d as Jaime learns how to navigate his new superpowers, as well as a depth and gravitas since the character is driven by a desire to save his family. Maridue\u00f1a nailed both. \u201cIt\u2019s just very evident that this is a star-making performance,\u201d Safran added.<\/p>\n

\n\tMaridue\u00f1a was thrilled at the prospect of continuing in the DCU. \u201cRegardless of if we get 20 movies or if it\u2019s just this one, I feel truly fulfilled,\u201d he said. \u201cIf we get to do another one, I\u2019m so ready \u2014 and shit, I\u2019ll put on another 20 pounds and get even bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs previously announced,<\/a> David Corenswet will be returning as Superman in \u201cMan of Tomorrow,\u201d written and directed by Gunn. In the sequel, Superman is forced to team up with his adversary Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) as they work to defeat an even bigger threat: the super-intelligent antagonist Brainiac (Lars Eidinger).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMan of Tomorrow\u201d is due in theaters on July 9, 2027.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Blue Beetle is back!
