{"id":76318,"date":"2025-08-12T04:28:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T04:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/76318\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T04:28:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T04:28:07","slug":"alamo-heights-city-council-approves-expansion-of-private-dining-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/76318\/","title":{"rendered":"Alamo Heights City Council approves expansion of private dining club"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">ALAMO HEIGHTS, Texas \u2013 The Alamo Heights City Council approved a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nplah.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-02-PZ-SUP-with-Council-Amendment_Clean.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nplah.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-02-PZ-SUP-with-Council-Amendment_Clean.pdf\">special use permit<\/a> (SUP) for major expansion of The Argyle, a private dining and social club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">City Council has been working on expanding The Argyle, located at 934 Patterson Avenue near Olmos Park, for more than three years. At a Monday City Council meeting, the vote for expansion passed 4-1. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Argyle has operated as a private dining club since 1956 and before that, served as a private residence, restaurant and an overnight inn since 1859, according to the SUP. It\u2019s currently owned by The Texas Biomedical Research Institute. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Some Alamo Heights residents are concerned that the vote is unfair considering three of the five city council members belong to The Argyle, including Mayor Al Honigblum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In an effort to meet the concerns of surrounding neighbors, the City Council reviewed the SUP and made revisions to the expansion proposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Argyle is proposing to build a major event center that holds up to 1,200 people. According to the SUP, no amplified music will be allowed, valet service is required and attendees can not park on surrounding residential streets. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nplah.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-02-PZ-SUP-with-Council-Amendment_Clean.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nplah.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-02-PZ-SUP-with-Council-Amendment_Clean.pdf\">SUP also says<\/a> the number of events with 250 attendees or less can be unlimited, and The Argyle can host an additional 52 events per year with attendance between 250-1,200 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Some residents who live next to the club are worried the construction and expansion will bring in more traffic and hurt public safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe aim of this SUP is to ensure the proposed use does not disrupt the neighborhood\u2019s character or quality of life,\u201d a resident said Monday in public comment. \u201cIt\u2019s really important that we don\u2019t mess up this neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Still, other community members who spoke at Monday\u2019s meeting found the SUP to be a reasonable compromise to their concerns. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cFor the first time in The Argyle\u2019s history, we will be held accountable with written rules, with enforcement provisions,\u201d the president of the Board of Governors at The Argyle said. \u201cThis has never happened. It\u2019s a new chapter in our relationship with this community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">City council members agreed at the meeting that the SUP is not perfect, but they say it has come a long way in the effort to meet concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThere\u2019s no solution to every problem,\u201d Honigblum said. \u201cI don\u2019t think this is perfect.
