Single Seattle residents need to make $135K to live comfortably, 6th most in U.S<\/a><\/p>\nThe annual increase outpaced the national inflation rate of 3.5% and exceeded the average 3.2% increase across the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Western region, which includes metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix and Anchorage. <\/p>\n
Seattle’s inflation rate was also 0.4 percentage points higher than the New York City metropolitan area.<\/p>\n
Only the Philadelphia-Wilmington-Camden region outranked Seattle’s rates with a year-over change of 5.4%.<\/p>\n
Prices in the Seattle area rose 1.0% during the two months ending in June 2026. Excluding food and energy, so-called core inflation increased 0.9% over the same period. Food prices rose 1.2%, while energy prices increased 1.5%. <\/p>\n
Energy costs continued to be one of the biggest drivers of inflation. Overall energy prices were up 20.7% from June 2025, while gasoline prices surged 24.7% over the year.<\/p>\n
Consumers also saw sharp increases in several everyday spending categories. Apparel prices climbed 14.7% over the year, fruit and vegetable prices rose 11.7%, and recreation costs increased 9.8%. The recreation category includes items such as pet supplies, televisions, toys, sporting goods and admissions to parks and museums.<\/p>\n
Food prices overall increased 3.5% compared with a year earlier. Grocery prices rose 0.9%, while the cost of dining out increased 6.2%. Shelter costs, another major household expense, climbed 2.1% over the past year.<\/p>\n
Over the two-month period ending in June, prices increased across most major categories. Household furnishings and operations posted one of the largest gains, rising 5.1%, while shelter increased 0.6%. Recreation and medical care were among the few categories to decline during the two-month period.<\/p>\n
The Consumer Price Index measures average changes over time in prices paid by urban consumers for a basket of goods and services.
