CANTON, New York (WWNY) – Two anonymous letters sent to local lawmakers raise concerns about the condition of Partridge Run Golf & Country Club, the village-owned course in Canton \u2014 but golfers who played there Wednesday say the criticism does not reflect what they experienced on the course.<\/p>\n
What the letters claim<\/p>\n
The letters, sent to local lawmakers, allege the greens are in poor condition, the rough is uncut, basic maintenance is being neglected and the pace of play is unacceptable.<\/p>\n
One letter says the problems are hurting the course\u2019s reputation. The other asks management to hire a qualified full-time golf course superintendent, implement a plan to restore conditions and mow the grass whenever weather permits, among other requests.<\/p>\n
Golfers disagree<\/p>\n
Rick Mace and a group of friends played a round at Partridge Run on Wednesday and disputed the letters\u2019 characterizations.<\/p>\n
\u201cCanton is lucky to have 2 good 18-hole courses,\u201d Mace said.<\/p>\n
Mace said any issues described in the letters may no longer apply.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re well-maintained now. At the time of the letter, there were some early-season spring issues or whatever, but not anymore,\u201d Mace said.<\/p>\n
Fellow golfer Tim Phalon also defended the course.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s one of the best courses in the North Country, I believe,\u201d Phalon said.<\/p>\n
What comes next<\/p>\n
A meeting is scheduled for July 21 for members to discuss the course\u2019s current condition and ways to improve it.<\/p>\n
The letters are expected to be a topic at the village\u2019s board meeting Wednesday night. The mayor says he couldn\u2019t comment on the matter until the board determines how to proceed. <\/p>\n
