{"id":766687,"date":"2026-07-16T17:39:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T17:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/766687\/"},"modified":"2026-07-16T17:39:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T17:39:15","slug":"the-view-faces-trouble-as-fcc-prepares-crackdown-on-abc-disney-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/766687\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;The View&#8217; faces trouble as FCC prepares crackdown on ABC, Disney show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Communications Commission is preparing to rule that<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/07\/media\/abc-pushes-back-against-fcc-review-says-the-view-not-fake-news\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> ABC\u2019s \u201cThe View\u201d is not a bona fide news program<\/a>, a decision that would upend more than two decades of precedent and subject the Disney-owned daytime talk show to federal equal-time rules for political candidates, according to a report.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg reported Wednesday that the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-07-15\/fcc-nearing-rulings-against-disney-over-the-view-tv-licenses?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=share&amp;utm_campaign=copy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> FCC is also expected to escalate<\/a> a separate investigation into Disney\u2019s broadcast television licenses, moving the matter toward an administrative hearing that could ultimately threaten ABC-owned stations in New York, Los Angeles and other major markets.<\/p>\n<p>The anticipated rulings, which people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg could come before Labor Day, would represent the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/22\/media\/trump-fccs-beef-with-the-view-prompts-abc-to-launch-on-air-campaign-for-viewer-support\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most aggressive regulatory action against a major US broadcaster<\/a> in decades and mark a significant victory for FCC Chairman Brendan Carr\u2019s effort to overhaul how the agency polices political programming.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Communications Commission is poised to rule that ABC\u2019s \u201cThe View\u201d is not a bona fide news program, according to a report. American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. via AP<\/p>\n<p>If the FCC strips \u201cThe View\u201d of its longstanding news exemption, the program generally would have to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/07\/us-news\/the-view-faces-fcc-probe-after-james-talarico-interview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">offer rival candidates comparable airtime<\/a> when it interviews someone running for office \u2014 a requirement ABC argues would fundamentally alter its editorial discretion.<\/p>\n<p>Disney is expected to challenge any adverse rulings, according to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>The FCC Media Bureau\u2019s ruling on \u201cThe View\u201d could be appealed to the full FCC and then to federal court, while the separate license proceeding could eventually be heard by FCC Chairman Brendan Carr or the full commission before any judicial appeal.<\/p>\n<p>The Post has sought comment from ABC and its parent company, Disney, as well as from the FCC.<\/p>\n<p>The dispute began after \u201cThe View\u201d interviewed Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico in February, prompting questions from the FCC about whether rival candidates were entitled to equal airtime under federal broadcast law.<\/p>\n<p>Carr subsequently opened an inquiry into whether \u201cThe View\u201d qualifies for the equal-time exemption afforded to bona fide news interview programs.<\/p>\n<p>FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has launched parallel reviews of ABC\u2019s broadcast licenses and \u201cThe View\u2019s\u201d status as a bona fide news program. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>In May, ABC and its Houston affiliate asked the FCC to reaffirm a 2002 agency ruling that designated \u201cThe View\u201d a bona fide news interview program exempt from the equal-time requirement.<\/p>\n<p>ABC escalated the fight earlier this month, arguing in reply comments that the FCC was attempting to insert itself into the network\u2019s editorial decisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe First Amendment does not permit the government to sit in an editor\u2019s chair,\u201d the ABC filing states.<\/p>\n<p>Semafor reported earlier this month that \u201cThe View\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/07\/05\/2026\/the-view-throttles-back-political-candidate-bookings-following-fcc-inquiry?utm_medium=media&amp;utm_campaign=flagshipnumbered1&amp;utm_source=newslettercta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">has quietly scaled back bookings of candidates running in competitive races<\/a> while the FCC\u2019s review remains pending.<\/p>\n<p>ABC parent company Disney has vowed to fight any adverse ruling from the FCC.
