\n\tRoughly 300 Netflix<\/a> programs across the streamer\u2019s library have used generative AI across their production process so far this year, the company revealed in its second-quarter earnings report <\/a>on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\n\tNetflix told shareholders in a letter that the technology\u2019s usage expands across every level of a program\u2019s production process, from its concept and pre-visualization to post-production and release. The company singled out programs like its Indian sports thriller series \u201cGlory,\u201d\u00a0its Brazilian soccer miniseries \u201cBrasil 70: A Saga do Tri\u201d\u00a0and its American Revolution-focused docuseries \u201cThe American Experiment\u201d\u00a0for their uses of the technology, which Netflix said helped create \u201chighly complex sequences\u201d\u00a0that included enhanced crowd sizes and battle sequences.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe are increasingly leveraging these tools to deliver higher-quality output more quickly and at a lower cost than traditional methods,\u201d\u00a0the company said. \u201cIn some cases, productions would have had to leave out key shots and sequences in the absence of GenAI technology.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe disclosure came as Netflix\u2019s second-quarter revenue hit $12.56 billion, up 13.4% year over year, with a net income of $3.4 billion (translating to 80 cents per share). On average, Wall Street analysts expected $12.59 billion and earnings per share of 79 cents, according to LSEG Data & Analytics.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe streaming giant has been vocal about adopting AI for various sectors of its business, including helping users find new titles, fueling its advertising business and building<\/a> an AI animation studio. Netflix in March also acquired<\/a> the Ben Affleck-founded company InterPositive, which it said would help provide filmmakers with AI tools to use throughout film and TV productions.<\/p>\n

\n\tNetflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said on the company\u2019s earnings call Thursday that, while the InterPositive deal was still in its \u201cearly days,\u201d\u00a0the company has seen its impact on productions alongside some of its other in-house tools. <\/p>\n

\n\tAI tools give \u201ccreatives better tools to bring their visions to life,\u201d Sarandos added, pointing to 17 minutes of AI-enhanced footage in \u201cThe American Experiment\u201d\u00a0that he claimed \u201cexpanded the scope of the series that just wouldn\u2019t have been feasible before\u201d\u00a0and that were produced \u201ctwice as fast and at half the cost of previous options.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStill, Sarandos said Netflix isn\u2019t looking to use AI to replace creative professionals.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe believe it takes great artists to make something great, and AI is not changing that,\u201d\u00a0he said. \u201cMovies are being made by people who make movies. AI provides them with better tools to make them even better.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe remarks echoed Sarandos\u2019 comments to<\/a> Politico in March, where he said AI \u201cshould be a creator tool,\u201d\u00a0similar to other production tools that have evolved over time, and that it could afford creators the opportunity to do things impossible before the technology emerged.<\/p>\n

\n\tHowever, he said, AI could only make things \u201cfaster and cheaper\u201d\u00a0if a high bar of quality followed. \u201cI don\u2019t think faster and cheaper matters if it\u2019s not better,\u201d\u00a0he told the outlet.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI do think that AI, particularly InterPositive, the company we bought from Ben [Affleck], will help creators make things better,\u201d\u00a0he added. \u201cUsing their own dailies, using their own production materials to make the film that they\u2019re making better.
