All out in 1983, they might seem obscure, but every 80s kid likely still knows them word for word today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSolitaire\u201d by Laura Branigan<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784244794_883_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSolitaire\u201d is on <a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/how-laura-branigan-took-an-italian-classic-and-turned-it-into-an-80s-post-disco-hit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Branigan\u2019<\/a>s sophomore album, appropriately called Branigan 2. Diane Warren and Martine Cl\u00e9menceau are the song\u2019s two writers.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tVideos by American Songwriter\t\t<\/p>\n<p>A Top 10 single, \u201cSolitaire\u201d says, \u201cOnce the cards were held by you \/ Now there\u2019s nothin\u2019 you can do \/ All those nights you sit alone, staring at the telephone \/ Wondering if I\u2019m ever comin\u2019 home \/ Solitaire, see what it\u2019s like now \/ Solitaire, to cry all night now \/ Solitaire, see how it feels to bear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSolitaire\u201d follows \u201cGloria\u201d, one of the biggest hits of Branigan\u2019s career. Before Branigan released \u201cSolitaire\u201d, it was first released as a French single by Cl\u00e9menceau.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s A Mistake\u201d by Men At Work<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784244795_68_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s A Mistake\u201d is on Men at Work\u2019s sophomore Cargo record. Written by lead singer Colin Hay, \u201cIt\u2019s A Mistake\u201d became a Top 10 single. Although it didn\u2019t do as well as songs like \u201cWho Can It Be Now\u201d and \u201cDown Under\u201d, \u201cIt\u2019s A Mistake\u201d remains a fan favorite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s A Mistake\u201d says, \u201cDon\u2019t try to say you\u2019re sorry \/ Don\u2019t say he drew his gun \/ They\u2019ve gone and grabbed old Ronnie \/ He\u2019s not the only one. Saying it\u2019s a mistake \/ It\u2019s a mistake \/ It\u2019s a mistake \/ It\u2019s a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The song was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/men-at-work\/its-a-mistake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">inspired<\/a> by the Cold War. In the lyrics, Ronnie references Ronald Reagan, who was President of the United States at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGold\u201d by Spandau Ballet<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784244795_5_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGold\u201d by Spandau Ballet follows \u201cTrue\u201d, the group\u2019s biggest hit. Although \u201cGold\u201d isn\u2019t nearly as much of a success story as \u201cTrue\u201d, it did become a Top 30 single.<\/p>\n<p>On True, Spandau Ballet\u2019s third studio album, \u201cGold\u201d was written by band member Gary Kemp. The song says, \u201cGold \/ Always believe in your soul \/ You\u2019ve got the power to know \/ You\u2019re indestructible \/ Always believe in, \u2019cause you are \/ Gold \/ Glad that you\u2019re bound to return \/ There\u2019s something I could have learned \/ You\u2019re indestructible \/ Always believe in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, although they had other hits, \u201cGold\u201d is Spandau Ballet\u2019s final Top 30 in the United States.
