The representatives said they were told last year the causes of the wildfires would be addressed, but claim now that they were not.

This story continues below.

Michigan representatives said they chose to write the letter because of how much the state has been impacted by wildfire smoke this week: on Wednesday, views of the Mackinac Bridge were completely obscured, and air quality levels plummeted. By Thursday, that smoke had reached the rest of the state and blanketed much of the Great Lakes region.

In the letter, the representatives wrote about the smoke’s impact on residents of the Mitten State, saying that hospitals were treating children, dialysis patients and older adults for the effects of smoke that “did not originate anywhere near them.”

The representatives said if Canada does not manage its forest to prevent the wildfires, the U.S. will explore “direct involvement in cross-border fuel reduction and firefighting capacity.”

“American lungs are paying the price for Canadian inaction, year after year,” the representatives accused, and asked the Canadian government for measurable steps to reduce wildfire risk.

WTOL 11 reached out to Natural Resources Canada, the agency involved in wildfire management, for a response to the accusations in the letter, and information on how their agency addresses wildfire mitigation. This article will be updated if we receive a response.

Natural Resources Canada’s Wildland Fire Prevention and Mitigation Strategy is available online here. The report cites climate change as a reason for worsening wildfires, as well increasing wildland-urban interface. Following the record-breaking 2023 wildfire season, the government developed the prevention strategy by establishing some of the following goals:

– By 2025, 60% of Canadians in areas of high wildland fire risk are aware of the risks facing their household.

– By 2025, 50% of Canadians have taken concrete actions to better prepare for and respond to climate change risks facing their household.

– Communities in zones of high-risk develop community wildland fire prevention and mitigation plans by 2030, with up to 15% implemented by 2028.

Additionally, the agency set targets of public awareness campaigns, creating dedicated prevention and mitigation governance structures, establishing training among communities, sectors and industries, and investments in prevention and mitigation activities, among others. The prevention and mitigation investments were set to be implemented in 2026, according to the report.

According to the Parks Canada website, the agency has its own national fire management program and has dedicated fire personnel who respond to wildfires.

Below are photos of smoke in the northwest Ohio area.

In a joint letter, four representatives said Canada’s ‘continued inaction’ regarding wildfires was ‘unacceptable.’ MICHIGAN, USA — Four…

[47
192,79
post-768066","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science
["GET
