{"id":770302,"date":"2026-07-18T13:48:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-18T13:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/770302\/"},"modified":"2026-07-18T13:48:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-18T13:48:13","slug":"perth-pharmacist-sacked-after-illegally-dispensing-herself-a-cocktail-of-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/770302\/","title":{"rendered":"Perth pharmacist sacked after illegally dispensing herself a cocktail of drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rebecca Peppiatt\" data-testid=\"author-avatar-image\" height=\"64\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/234745bd4728185116e9d41b06e90f37f7858ee9.png\"  width=\"64\" class=\"sc-9a01536c-0 libeSR\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"article-datetime\" class=\"sc-5cbbddda-5 hxoHkT\">July 18, 2026 \u2014 12:22pm<\/p>\n<p>Save<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-d1b14060-4 JmUoF\">You have reached your maximum number of saved items.<\/p>\n<p>Remove items from your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/goodfood\/saved\" class=\"sc-3f16ee48-12 sc-d1b14060-2 jyLmZI iQLtAb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">saved list<\/a> to add more.<\/p>\n<p>AAA<\/p>\n<p>A Perth pharmacist has faced disciplinary action after she was caught dispensing herself a cocktail of strong painkillers and anxiety medication without a prescription.<\/p>\n<p>Gemma Louise Latter worked at Wizard Pharmacy in Carramar when between April 2024 and January 2025 she dispensed herself almost 300 pills, some of which were schedule 8 drugs, or \u2018controlled drugs\u2019 that come with a warning about the potential for misuse, abuse, and dependence.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gemma Latter took medications and falsified records for personal use.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/a477fd716b49ac119d4ae10eef64bc3332a62062.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/>Gemma Latter took medications and falsified records for personal use.Louie Douvis<\/p>\n<p>Latter, a Curtin University graduate, dispensed the pills under the name of a person described as \u201can acquaintance through a mutual friend\u201d and created false records to cover her tracks.<\/p>\n<p>The medications included 70 tablets of zolpidem, used for the temporary treatment of insomnia, dispensed on five separate occasions, 20 tablets of paracetamol with codeine and 60 capsules of tramadol, an opioid used for \u201cchronic, around-the-clock pain\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/national\/western-australia\/he-was-caught-helping-bikies-stay-out-of-jail-now-this-perth-lawyer-is-heading-there-himself-20260717-p60gc2.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Lawyer Ted Dobson has been caught up in global enforcement operation Ironside.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/21b0cd880c19a7e0a7a0038547e9ffbc3ca48368.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She also dispensed herself 56 capsules of pregabalin which is used to treat \u201cneuropathic (nerve) pain, fibromyalgia, partial-onset epilepsy, and generalised anxiety disorder\u201d, as well as 50 tablets of diazepam and 28 tablets of tapentadol, a strong opioid pain medication usually taken after surgery or injury for acute pain.<\/p>\n<p>State Administrative Tribunal documents published last week state that at no time did Latter have a prescription for any of the medication.<\/p>\n<p>Latter qualified as a pharmacist in January 2018.<\/p>\n<p>After her offending came to light, the Pharmacy Board of Australia placed restrictions on Latter\u2019s registration to stop her from being able to access medications.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency\u2019s (AHPRA) investigated Latter and on Friday the Tribunal upheld the Pharmacy Board\u2019s recommendation to impose disciplinary action, suspending her from practice for 10 months.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of her suspension Latter will have to complete one-on-one education with an approved educator of a minimum of six hours and address appropriate dispensing, ethical decision making and record keeping.
