{"id":771308,"date":"2026-07-19T02:36:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-19T02:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/771308\/"},"modified":"2026-07-19T02:36:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-19T02:36:11","slug":"rare-toads-return-las-vegas-springs-preserve-first-time-65-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/771308\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare Toads return Las Vegas Springs Preserve first time 65 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A rare <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5vegas.com\/2026\/07\/10\/rare-toad-spotted-springs-preserve-first-time-nearly-65-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">toad species<\/a> has resurfaced at the Springs Preserve in Las Vegas for the first time since approximately 1962, according to conservationists at the refuge.<\/p>\n<p>The newly found Woodhouse\u2019s Toad is a male, which the preserve calls a \u201cpossible early colonist\u201d  who seems to be looking for love. <\/p>\n<p>It was caught on camera performing a mating call in the Cienega area of the preserve.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.52154532;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40025671\" width=\"898\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-18-at-60936-PM.png\" alt=\"Entrance to Springs Preserve with a red light at the traffic signal.\" class=\"wp-image-40025671\"  \/>A rare Woodhouse\u2019s Toad was spotted at Springs Preserve for first time in nearly 65 years<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur trail camera caught this lone adult male calling in the Cienega, possibly an early colonist\u2026 though no females have answered yet,\u201d said the preserve in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/springspreserve\/posts\/pfbid026CEjtC3toL4E3dDLuFd1RcdqZ4HLyCPzxtzggh8p7kA16fMSanqizA8pQs1AJwDrl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a> post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis appearance by our forlorn frog friend marks a big moment in local wildlife history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Woodhouse\u2019s Toads have not been recorded at the site since the original springs \u2014 a natural oasis, or \u201cCienaga,\u201d for early settlers in Las Vegas \u2014 ran dry in 1962, when the toads were displaced or hybridized with Arizona Toads elsewhere in the Las Vegas Valley.<\/p>\n<p>The hybrid Arizona-Woodhouse\u2019s toads replaced the species entirely in about 1976, making the recent discovery the first recorded appearance of the Woodhouse\u2019s Toad in almost 65 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40025676\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/AdobeStock_412377263.jpg\" alt=\"Woodhouse's toad (Anaxyrus woodhousii) in a natural sandy setting.\" class=\"wp-image-40025676\"  \/>Shown in this photo is a Woodhouse\u2019s Toad, which lived around Cienagas in Las Vegas. tomreichner \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>One Facebook user claims that there\u2019s hundreds of Woodhouse\u2019s Toads in her yard every spring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had them emerge and hop through my yard to get to the pond every spring,\u201d she wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they\u2019re not hanging in the wetlands there\u2019s something wrong with the ecology, lol.
