Similarly, \u201cStuart\u2019s\u201d stars were eager to step into the spotlight. On \u201cBig Bang,\u201d Sussman\u2019s Stuart frequently milled in the back of scenes. And, since he used to work at a comic bookstore, \u201cI just did what I did there\u00a0\u2014 took inventory. I had the clipboard\u201d and knew how to look believable.<\/p>\n
Now, in \u201cStuart,\u201d he has a heavier lift and chemistry with Bowie, Brian Posehn and Lauren Lapkus, his \u201cBig Bang\u201d co-stars.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was some natural chemistry there, which was great,\u201d Lapkus says. \u201cThe way the scripts unfold, I feel like we come together really well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adds Posehn, \u201cFrom the first day, I felt like, \u2018Oh, this is going to work.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought we\u2019d found a wonderful balance of the four main characters,\u201d Lorre says. \u201cThe only thing that changed was the stakes. The stakes are insanely high. The characters are characters we\u2019d all fallen in love with long ago.\u201d<\/p>\n
When they were on \u201cBig Bang,\u201d audiences wanted to see more of them. \u201cWe always said that it was a strong bench,\u201d executive producer Bill Prady says. \u201cWe were never writing away from a performer. You could go to anybody. And to have that experience again as a writer was just incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the 10 episodes of \u201cStuart,\u201d the foursome drops into all kinds of worlds and find plenty of inspiration.<\/p>\n
The variety works, Prady says, because the characters are interesting people. “You don\u2019t get enough time with any of them, and you want to spend time finding out about more of them,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
The \u201cBig Bang\u201d universe is about outliers, Lorre adds.<\/p>\n
\u201cDespite enormous, sophisticated scientific minds, they were incompetent in the real world,” he says. “Aside from Sheldon, they wanted to participate but didn\u2019t know how \u2026 and that\u2019s universal. That\u2019s how I was able to approach these characters, because I really had no way to join them as quantum physicists. They were brilliant, brilliant minds that were struggling to be part of everyday life.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cStuart Fails to Save the Universe\u201d debuts July 23 on HBO Max, with subsequent episodes available on Thursdays.\u00a0<\/p>\n
