A second person has died from the Legionnaires\u2019 disease cluster in the Upper East Side, <\/a>health officials announced, but the recent decline in new cases suggests that the source of the deadly outbreak has likely been eliminated.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are heartbroken\u00a0to\u00a0learn\u00a0that another\u00a0New Yorker\u00a0has lost their life\u00a0to\u00a0Legionnaires\u2019 disease on the Upper East Side.\u00a0Our deepest condolences are with their loved ones as they grieve,\u201d\u00a0NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Alister F. Martin said Saturday.<\/p>\n

The new fatal case comes just one day after health officials announced the first death<\/a> connected to the outbreak in the Manhattan neighborhood on Friday.<\/p>\n

The latest Legionnaire\u2019s disease outbreak to strike the city has seen at least 72 cases with over 50 people hospitalized.<\/p>\n

Nine remain in the hospital as of Saturday night, officials said.<\/p>\n

An average of one new case had been reported per day between July 10 and July 17, a sharp decline from the first week of July where an average of over eight new cases were being reported daily, officials said.<\/p>\n

All victims of the outbreak have been on the Upper East Side from the cluster in the Carnegie Hill and Yorkville neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile\u00a0we mourn this loss, the\u00a0data\u00a0are also encouraging.\u00a0Our aggressive\u00a0strategy of testing, enforcement, and remediation\u00a0appears to have stopped the\u00a0source of exposure,\u201d Martin said.<\/p>\n

The disease, which stems from Legionella bacteria that has been found in 76 cooling towers across Upper East Side neighborhoods and one on the Upper West Side, is a deadly type of pneumonia that can be treated with antibiotics if caught early.<\/p>\n

City officials ordered all buildings that returned positive screening results to clean and disinfect their systems as part of the investigation.<\/p>\n

All required remediations were completed by July 16.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0will continue inspecting every cooling tower that tested positive and will hold accountable any owner who\u00a0fails to\u00a0comply with\u00a0our public health laws,\u201d Martin added.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s outbreak comes after over\u00a0250 cooling towers around the Big Apple<\/a>\u00a0were cited for issues relating to Legionella testing since last year \u2014 and more than half of those were in Manhattan.<\/p>\n
