Charlie Stramel may already be that player. The 21st overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft has gone from intriguing first-round project to one of the organization’s most promising prospects, and his breakout at Michigan State has made the question around him feel less like a hopeful guess and more like a legitimate projection.

What makes Stramel so appealing is how well his game fits what the Wild have often lacked. At 6-foot-3 and 216 pounds, he brings size, strength, and a right shot profile that’s always valuable in the NHL. But he isn’t just a big body. He grew offensively at Michigan State, finishing his senior year with 19 goals and 44 points in 37 games while posting a plus-29 rating. That kind of jump suggests a player who isn’t simply surviving at a higher level, but driving play.

Stramel’s rise becomes even more interesting when viewed through the lens of the Wild’s roster needs. Minnesota hasn’t always had an abundance of young, homegrown centers who can handle tough minutes and still contribute offensively. Stramel looks like the type of player who could eventually balance skill and structure: a center who can play heavy, win puck battles, and still chip in enough offense to matter. For a team that wants more balance down the middle, that’s a compelling profile.

There’s also a maturity to his game that stands out. Late in his Michigan State run, he looked increasingly pro-ready. He backed that up in his senior year with consistent production and responsibility in all areas of the ice. The Wild signed him to a three-year entry-level deal in April, a sign that the organization sees him as more than just a prospect to monitor from afar. He’s now officially part of the system, and has a path to the NHL roster if he plays well in training camp.

Stramel’s work in the faceoff circle is one of the clearest reasons to believe in his future NHL center. He led all Big Ten skaters with 483 faceoff wins in his final season, ranking second nationally in faceoff wins and showing he could be trusted in critical possessions. For a center, that matters. Winning draws can swing momentum, help on special teams, and quickly earn coaches’ trust.

His faceoff numbers matter even more because they fit the rest of his game. A center who can win draws, protect pucks, and play with pace gives a team flexibility. That’s especially true for a Wild club that will be looking for cost-controlled help up the middle in the coming years.

If Stramel continues on this trajectory, he doesn’t only look like a useful middle-six option. He looks like a player who could become a real fixture in Minnesota’s top-nine center mix. The Wild don’t need to force the label too early, but the signs are obvious. Charlie Stramel is no longer just a promising name in the pipeline. He’s starting to look like the center the Wild have been waiting for.

Think you could write a story like this?
