New Parkway East bridge being slid into place, PennDOT says<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPendant had been planning on *** 24 hour time frame for that move, and you definitely see the progress. Pittsburgh’s Action News reporter Felicity Taylor is live overlooking the site tonight where people have gathered to watch, Felicity. Yeah, Chandy, it appears that they have paused the sliding for now, but they have made so much progress since this morning, it appears there’s only *** few feet left to go until it’s fully aligned with the parkway here. We did speak with *** representative from Mamet earlier about this entire process and what it takes. You won’t see much happening, uh, very, very quickly. Uh, the system has *** maximum speed, I believe, of about 6 m per hour. So, uh, you’ll need to get your time lapse camera out in order to see something happen at *** reasonable speed, but yeah, uh, once we start, you’ll see the hydraulic cylinders at the base of each of the skid shoes, uh, move out and then move the, uh, the bridge piece by piece, uh, from where it is now to where the old bridge currently stands. The bridge weighs 11,000 tons and is moving 102 ft into place, approximately 3 ft at *** time. It’s being done by *** skidding system. Each of the 42 skid shoes installed have the ability to operate independently. They have integrated hydraulic. used to lift the load from its temporary supports and set it down on the permanent bearings. Now this is the same system that was used to move the Chernobyl new safe confinement into position back in 2016. This another massive project here and plenty of people have come out to watch it happen today. So far we think the bridge is faster than *** slug but slower than *** caterpillar. It is pretty interesting to see this. I mean, it’s *** pretty cool feat of engineering, I’d say. Penda originally told us that this slide could take from 24 to 30 hours. Again, of course it seems like they only have *** few feet left to go, but they do, uh, appear to be in *** pause right now.
