When JP Hurlbert<\/a> heard his name called by the Detroit<\/a> Red Wings on the night of the NHL Entry Draft in Buffalo, it fit perfectly into his summer plans.<\/p>\n

He already knew that he\u2019d be spending plenty of time in Michigan during the offseason. Now he could pretty much pencil in that he\u2019d be basically making himself at home in the Great Lakes State this summer.<\/p>\n

After attending Red Wings development camp earlier this month, Hurlbert headed home to Allen, Texas, for a little R&R. <\/p>\n

\u201cI got to go enjoy some time with my friends and family,\u201d Hurlbert<\/a> said. <\/p>\n

About a week ago, the player Detroit chose 23rd overall in the 2026 draft was back in Michigan, preparing for his next summer hockey assignment.<\/p>\n

Red Wings Pick Readying for World Junior Summer Showcase<\/p>\n

Hurlbert is one of three Red Wings draftees who have been invited by USA Hockey to participate in the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase.<\/p>\n

Hurlbert, fellow 2026 draftee Victor Plante<\/a> (47th overall), and 2025 pick Brent Solomon<\/a> (109th overall) will be attending the showcase. Training camp for Team USA is slated for July 22-24 at the Belfor Training Center, adjacent to Little Caesars Arena. <\/p>\n

The World Junior Summer Showcase will take place July 26-Aug. 1 at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve come back here to train, obviously,\u201d Hurlbert said. \u201cThe I\u2019ll go right down the road for World Junior Camp and then stay here for the rest of the summer and keep learning, keep training.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s enjoying spending his summer working out in Detroit alongside other Red Wings hopefuls. <\/p>\n

\u201cBeing with a lot of the prospects and then into Michigan,\u201d Hurlbert listed as his plan for the remainder of the summer. \u201cSo I\u2019ll spend a lot of time here for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

A 42-goal scorer for the WHL\u2019s Kamloops Blazers last season, Hurlbert is making the transition to the NCAA next season, playing for the Wolverines in nearby Ann Arbor. <\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I\u2019m super excited to go to Michigan,\u201d Hurlbert said. \u201cI think Michigan\u2019s a great college. It\u2019s obviously a lot of skill there, a tremendous staff. So when I got the opportunity, it was a no-brainer for me. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think the way Coach Nard (Brandon Naurato) thinks offense and can help them develop talent is world-class, and I\u2019m just super excited to go there and learn from him.\u201d<\/p>\n
