{"id":773662,"date":"2026-07-20T10:12:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T10:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/773662\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T10:12:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T10:12:08","slug":"hundreds-gather-for-art-therapy-at-uh-cancer-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/773662\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds gather for art therapy at UH Cancer Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; Nearly 200 cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, family members, health care providers and supporters gathered to explore how those affected by cancer can use art to express healing, resilience and well-being.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiinewsnow.com\/2026\/06\/18\/uh-cancer-center-host-free-healing-through-art-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiinewsnow.com\/2026\/06\/18\/uh-cancer-center-host-free-healing-through-art-event\/\">The \u201cHealing Through Art\u201d workshop<\/a> took place Saturday at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center from 9 to 11 a.m., hosted by the center\u2019s Sunsan C. Hirano Cancer CARE Community (Community, Awareness, Research and Emotional Well-Being).<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The workshop featured practitioners representing a variety of cultural and artistic traditions and therapeutic approaches, with haiku reflection and meditation, music, visual arts, lei-making and crafting activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Leni Acosta Knight, one of three artists featured at the event and a cancer survivor herself, talked about her own experience of releasing her emotions through art while battling cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cArt doesn\u2019t really erase your pain, but it gives you the sanctuary to go in and express your feelings and emotions without any judgment,\u201d she said. \u201cAs a cancer survivor, I know what it\u2019s like to go through fear, pain and anxiety. Today was a lot of laughter, a lot of tears, but mostly a lot of laughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Saturday\u2019s event was a part of a quarterly series of events at the UH Cancer Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Their next event, focusing more on physical activity, will take place in October. <\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 Hawaii News Now.
