{"id":773677,"date":"2026-07-20T10:24:32","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T10:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/773677\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T10:24:32","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T10:24:32","slug":"maine-restricts-animal-entry-after-invasive-fly-detected-in-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/773677\/","title":{"rendered":"Maine restricts animal entry after invasive fly detected in U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) &#8211; The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry is imposing new movement restrictions and entry requirements for animals coming into the state following the detection of New World Screwworm in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">New World Screwworm, or NWS, is a type of fly that was eradicated in the U.S. in 1966. On June 3, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed a case of NWS in Texas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The flies lay their eggs in wounds on any warm-blooded animal. The detection of the flies adds risk to moving animals, as it may introduce the flies to a new area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Under the new rules, any infested animal or suspected infested animal will not be allowed into Maine. Any animal originally from an area where NWS quarantine procedures are in place will not be allowed in until the quarantine is complete.
